Application of Oils
Topical application involves applying appropriately diluted essential oils to the skin. There are two distinct processes that are involved for topical absorption to occur: penetration and permeation (Buckle, 2015). Penetration is the entry of the essential oil’s chemical constituents into and through the skin, whereas permeation is the absorption into the body (Buckle, 2015). The percentage of chemical constituents that are absorbed is dependent on different factors such as skin permeability, age, and the essential oil concentration applied
(Buckle, 2015).
