the client’s condition; decide on a course of action; anticipate the management of potential outcomes; and accept accountability for deciding that the particular procedure is required and for ensuring that any potential outcomes are managed appropriately”(CNO, Authorizing Mechanisms, 2020).
As long as organizational policies support nurses initiating the use of essential oil therapy, the nurse is able to follow already established nursing assessment and care planning to develop and document an appropriate client specific care plan that utilizes essential oil therapy as a compliment to the clients already established care plan. The supplied documentation and assessment tools are supplemental to already established tools by the organization. The implementation of essential oil therapy should always be part of an interdisciplinary team client care conference. This ensures that the development and initiation of the essential oil therapy is in alignment with all other therapies and treatments the client is receiving.
When starting the care planning process it is essential to start with the client and their views. Nurses promote client well being through respecting the ethical values of client choice and well being. Starting with a dialogue around the clients view on complimentary therapy and the role it plays in their view of health is the best place to start. Nurses are responsible for providing clients with all information and choices available to them. This includes nurses evaluating the appropriateness of a therapy for their client. In order to do this, nurses must have the knowledge of the action and effects of the therapy in order to assess and educate their client on the risks and benefits as it relates to their specific client (CNO, Complimentary Therapies, 2014).
Nurses need to have access to comprehensive resources to gain the knowledge required about a specific intervention in order to analyze its appropriateness in the context of their specific client, at that specific time, in that specific environment. This resource tool aims to provide a starting point for the assessment of appropriateness of essential oil use as a complimentary therapy.
