perspective. As with every care and therapy decision, informed consent is required from the client regardless of if the therapy is requested by the client, the family or proposed by the health care provider (CNO, Complimentary Therapies, 2014).
Implementing essential oils as a complimentary therapy also requires that nurses maintain their professional standards and responsibilities as it pertains to the documentation of assessment, administration of therapy as well as the evaluation of effectiveness. Similarly to any therapy being administered to a client by a nurse, there must be record of an appropriate assessment, education, informed consent, administration, and evaluation of effectiveness. Please see the appendix of this resource for some samples of a documentation tool, assessment tool, and sample organizational policy.
For client care plan’s where the essential oil therapy is not effective or the client has reactions /allergies, a consult from a registered aromatherapist nurse is one way of ensuring that interested clients and their families are provided with access to the best person to educate and evaluate their appropriateness for the intervention and to recommend the most appropriate oils for their use.
