How to Calculate Dilution
Dilution can be determined using the following formula:
20 drops = 1 mL essential oil
1. 20 x (mL of carrier oil)
2. Desired percentage x (answer to step 1)
3. Answer to step 2 divided by 100 = Number of drops required
EXAMPLE 1: Using 60 mL of carrier oil and want a dilution of 2.5% 20 x 60 = 1200
2.5 x 1200 = 3000
3000/100 = 30 drops
To achieve 2.5 % 30 drops of essential oil needs to be added to 60 mL of carrier oil or lotion.
EXAMPLE 2: Using 30 mL of carrier oil and want a dilution of 4% 20 x 30 = 600
4.0 x 600 = 2400
2400/100 = 24 drops
To achieve 4% 24 drops of essential oil needs to be added to 30 mL of carrier oil or lotion.
