Inhalation Safety Guidelines
Essential oil inhalation can be accomplished in several different ways. Most common are through the use of a diffuser or nasal inhaler. To be effective the aroma does not need to be inhaled for prolonged periods of time, in fact less is more when it comes to essential oil use (Tisserand, 2020). Diffusion should occur intermittently where the diffuser is operating for 30-60 minutes and followed by 30-60 minutes off (Tisserand, 2020). Intermittent diffusion decreases the occurrence of essential oil toxicity which can result in headaches and nausea (Tisserand, 2020). Our bodies also get used to essential oils over time decreasing their effectiveness, appropriate diffusion will help to avoid this from occurring (Tisserand, 2020). It is also advisable to diffuse in well ventilated areas (Tisserand, 2020). When setting up your diffuser ensure that you read manufacture guidelines, generally only 5-8 drops of oil are needed.
Nasal inhalers are an excellent inhalation alternative for scent free facilities. Nasal inhalers allow individuals to benefit from the oil’s therapeutic properties without exposing others to the aroma. 5-10 drops added to the inhaler cotton wick is all that is needed. The wicks can be replaced as needed.
