작가노트(Artist's Note)

1973년 이래 나는 파스텔로 주변 풍경들을 담아내는 것에 내 삶을 쏟아부었고 이 여정은 르네상스에서 현대에 이르기까지의 대가들을 연구
하도록 이끌었다. '안플랑에르(en plein air)'는 야외현장에서 그리는 방식으로 자연과 밀접하게 협업함으로써 자연 세계를 훨씬 더 잘 감상
할 수 있게 된다. 사진은 유용한 도구이지만, 그 장소에 참여하여 풍경, 눈, 마음을 교환하는 일을 대체할 수는 없겠다. 렘브란트는 "여러분에
게 자연만이 진정한 스승이다"라고 말하지 않았던가. 나는 그림을 제작하는 것이 아니라, 그림을 창조해 내려고 애쓴다. 파스텔로 자연이라는
팔레트를 관통하는 자연스런 빛이 추는 춤의 일부를 담아내고 이것이 감상자들의 마음을 움직이게 하는 그 무엇인가가 되길 바란다. 내 그
림이 시선이길. 우리가 무엇인가 특별한 것을 봤을 때 우리를 멈추게 하고 머무르게 만드는 그런 시선이면 좋겠다.

Capturing a piece of the landscape around me in pastel is something that has consumed my life since 1973. It led to study of the
master's from the Renaissance to the Modern. Working closely with nature 'en plein air,' on location, has led to a much greater
appreciation of the natural world. Photography, while a useful tool, cannot be a substitute for being there and becoming a part
of the exchange of landscape, eye and mind. As Rembrandt said, "You have but one master and that is Nature." I do not wish to
produce a picture, I strive to create a painting. Something that moves the viewer by capturing a piece of the spontaneous dance
of light across the palette of nature with pastel. I hope my paintings are like a glance - when we see something that makes us take
pause and linger for a moment.
