Industry Insider:
North American & Caribbean Cruise Duty & Tax Free Retail 2015
4.1 NATIONALITIES
In our research, we included two of the leading nationalities cruising within the North American & Caribbean region; Americans and Canadians.
Awareness, browsing and purchasing levels are very similar for both nationalities, though Canadians show a greater preference for purchasing on-board and a lower propensity to purchase from Duty / Tax Free stores on-land compared to US cruise travellers.
AWARENESS
Around 9 in 10 Americans and Canadians recalled Duty / Tax Free stores on their last trip. Recall of on-board stores is higher than on-land stores, especially amongst Canadians, with only half recalling Tax or Duty Free stores on-land.
BROWSING
8 in 10 American cruise travellers browse Duty / Tax Free services, equivalent to 88% of those aware of the service. Of those travellers who are aware, Canadians are slightly more likely than Americans to visit on-board stores (73% vs. 69%) but less likely to visit stores on-land.
PURCHASING
70% of travellers purchase in Duty / Tax Free stores, equivalent to almost 9 in 10 browsers. Canadians are slightly more likely than Americans to purchase from on-board stores (57% vs. 53%) but less likely to purchase from stores on-land.
