3.2.2 CATEGORIES PURCHASED
Category purchasing amongst cruise passengers travelling to / from their cruise shows a similar pattern to purchasing in the cruise channel, although some notable exceptions are apparent.
The proportion buying Alcohol and Watches & Jewellery is higher than in the cruise channel at around half, while Souvenir purchasing falls from first to the third most purchased category.
American travellers are significantly more likely than Canadians to buy Watches & Jewellery while travelling internationally. For the Alcohol category, older travellers over index at 59%.
Tobacco purchasing whilst travelling internationally to or from a cruise is at a much higher level than that of the cruise channel. This is potentially being driven by cruise travellers not being allowed to use Tobacco purchased on-board the vessel during their cruise, leading some to prefer alternative channels; a factor which could also be driving the difference in Alcohol purchasing.
Unlike Tobacco, levels of Beauty buying are higher amongst international travellers at 36% than those buying in the cruise channel. The Beauty offer particularly appeals to younger travellers, females and Americans,
Lowest purchasing levels are seen in the Confectionery and Travel & Accessories categories, which is consistent with the cruise channel.
