Industry Insider:
North American & Caribbean Cruise Duty & Tax Free Retail 2015
3.2.1 ALTERNATIVE DUTY & TAX FREE SHOPPING
Our research suggests that more than half (56%) of North American & Caribbean cruise passengers travelled internationally either to get to their departure cruise port or at the end of their most recent cruise.
8 in 10 of those travelling internationally, which equates to 44% of total passengers in our sample, recall seeing opportunities to purchase Duty / Tax Free items whilst travelling internationally to or from their cruise, illustrating a high incidence of exposure to alternative Duty / tax Free channels.
Despite the fact that a far higher proportion of Canadians travelled internationally, Americans are significantly more likely than Canadians to have noticed Duty / Tax Free shops whilst travelling internationally. Younger travellers are also significantly more likely than travellers over 40 to have seen opportunities to make Duty / Tax Free purchases.
Almost two thirds of cruise passengers travelling internationally made a purchase in a Duty / Tax Free store, equivalent to 36% of the whole sample. Americans, younger travellers, males and short cruise travellers are more likely to have made a Duty / Tax Free purchase while travelling to or from their cruise.
This shows the extent to which Duty / Tax Free shopping in the overall cruise channel is competing with other Travel Retail channels among a fairly high proportion of passengers.
