Industry Insider:
European Cruise Duty & Tax Free Retail 2016
1.3 INTRODUCTION
This report provides an overview of the cruise Travel Retail channel, focusing on sales of Duty and Tax Free goods to European passengers cruising within the European region, inclusive of cruises in both the Mediterranean and the North European areas.
The report evaluates the current state of the market, looking at both the supply side - the range of services being offered by Duty and Tax Free retailers both on-board the vessels and in on-land port based stores - and the demand side - evaluating the current level of awareness, usage and purchasing, and associated drivers and barriers among European nationalities travelling on recreational sea cruises within the region.
In this report, the cruise Duty and Tax Free offer refers to Duty and Tax Free items offered for sale by cruise or port operators and/or their concession-holding partners prior to, during, or after a cruise traveller’s journey. Products sold in convenience stores, such as newspapers, magazines and toiletries are excluded from this definition.
1.3.1 EUROPEAN CRUISES: MARKET BACKGROUND
Despite a slight decrease in prominence over recent years, largely due to the rapid growth of cruising in the Asian region, Europe continues to be of paramount importance to the global cruise industry, accounting for more than 30% of total bed days in 2015, according the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA).
In terms of the global cruise industry, Europe remains the second most prominent region for cruising after the Caribbean, with the Mediterranean alone accounting for 20% of total global passenger capacity share in 2015 and the rest of Europe i.e. Northern Europe and the Nordic / Baltic area accounting for a further 11% of global cruise passengers in 2015.
However, whilst these two areas collectively make Europe the second largest global cruise region, they also represent two of the industry’s largest cruising regions in isolation.
The European region accounts for around 30% of global cruise
bed days
