The European region is highly suited to cruising with high numbers of leading European cities providing key port call locations, such as Rome, Barcelona, Athens, Rhodes and Venice in the Mediterranean and Edinburgh, Bruges, Stockholm and Tallinn in Northern Europe.
Furthermore, Europe is the domestic location for a relatively sizable proportion of global cruise passengers, with 6.4 million travellers being sourced from the region in 2014 (Source: CLIA), three quarters of whom remained in the European region for their cruise. However, as with the North American & Caribbean region, the size of the European market and available passenger capacity has led to a highly competitive marketplace, particularly in the summer months when the Mediterranean cruise market is at its peak.
As a result, cruise operators in the European region are under continuous pressure to differentiate their services from competitors, particularly when considering that high levels of repeat cruising occur among European cruise travellers therefore providing many with the capability to directly compare services, cruise liners and cruise operators with one another.
The European region is highly suited to cruising due to the geographic make-up of the region as well as the high domestic passenger numbers
