OLD TOWN
During the 1960’s, Old Town became the center of the Bohemian renaissance
movement. In recent years the development of several highrises and the emergence
of new town homes has brought in upscale retail and dining establishments. The
neighborhood, which is located between North Avenue and Division Street on North
Wells Street, is home to Chicago’s legendary comedic troupe Second City. The annual
Old Town art fair has grown into the largest juried art fair in the country, and Wells
Street, once a strip of hippie shops, now offers upscale boutiques. Nearby on Halsted
Street is the impressive home of the renowned Steppenwolf Theater. Today, Old Town
remains one of the most lively and picturesque neighborhoods in Chicago.
