In one of the toughest tournaments this month, Noah Cortez finished second at 152 in the Zinkin Classic this past weekend.
Cortez, who entered as the top seed, lost in the finals to No. 2 Cael Valencia of St. John Bosco by a technical fall. Cortez started the tournament with a technical fall against Brian Isaias of Villa Park and then posted 7-5 win over Clovis High’s Scott Hokit before defeating Vito Cuttone of Clovis North, 5-4. In the semifinals, Cortez beat Daniel Vizcarra of Gilroy, 5-3.
Daniel Long placed 4th at 170
after a tough 5-3 loss to Andres Aguilera from Toppenish. Long had defeated Jayson Davis of Nipomo and Andrew Zamora of Clovis High. Long then faced Aguilera in the quarterfinals and was dealt a 3-1 setback. Long also posted wins over Evan Myrtue of El Capitan (Merced) and Kodaik Stephens of Brett Harte.
At 138, Cristian Esquivel lost his opening match to Jason Bautista of Righetti, but he posted a 4-2 win over Josiah Kelly of Clovis East before ending his day with a loss to Ean Evans of Mission Oak.
Matt Montalvo recorded a pin against Gabriel Sanchez of Bullard and in his next match
was defeated by top seeded Maximo Renteria of Buchanan. Montalvo then faced Draedon Bone of Salinas and came out on top by a narrow margin, 3-2. His tournament concluded with a 11-7 loss to Marco Florez of Exeter.
Javier Castro lost his first match to No. 6 Carter Bailey, then posted a 6-3 win over Roman Velasquez of Caruthers and a 7-2 decision against Joel Godina of Toppenish. Castro then lost to No. 7 Michael Gioffre of Buchanan.
As a team Dinuba was 17th with 64. 5 points. Buchanan was first with 308.5 and Gilroy was second with 209.5.

Gabriel Mission. OHS finished with a 32-1-2 record, the most wins in any sport in school history.
The spring sports season was in full swing by April as Opening Day Ceremonies was held for Dinuba Youth Baseball and Softball. Two additional teams were formed to handle the influx of players bringing the total to 31 from 29 teams.
• May rolled around, the Dinuba High boys track and field team clinched their fourth consecutive league title compiling 172 team points well ahead of runner-up Exeter, 103.5.
The Emperors’ softball team also clinched a Central Sequoia League title, their first in eight years. Dinuba went onto the Valley championship game where the Emperors were dealt a 12-6 loss by Selma.
• In June, DHS track and field hurdler Daniel Martinez placed 11th in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles at the CIF State Track and Field Championships.
The Cal Ripken Baseball’s 12 and under All Star team qualified for the state playoffs as a No. 1 seed.
The Lady Dynamite finished
the year 10-0 capturing the Dinuba Majors Softball Championship. In the Majors Division Baseball championship game, the Braves defeated the Dodgers, 4-2.
With the high-school area teams out, July started out with a bang as former DHS basketball players, Nathan Carrion along with Elijah Mayberry, played a role in the West All-Stars routing the East All-Stars in the 48th Annual City/County game, 121-90, at Fresno City College. Samantha Mendoza scored eight points as the East All-Stars rallied for a 56-48 win over the West All-Stars
The Dinuba 12 and under Cal Ripken All-Stars team wrapped up their season with a 2-2 record in the Central California Cal Ripken State tournament in Bakersfield.
• August continued the trend of outstanding news as former Dinuba High and Fresno State Dylan Lee, who was promoted to the New Orleans Baby Cakes, the Triple A affiliation of the Miami Marlins.
Dinuba High’s football team got out to a quick start with a shutout win over Redwood High and a 52-7 rout against Reedley.
Behind the play of seniors Sadi Alcala and Sheanne Baniaga, the Orosi High volleyball team defeated Minarets for sole
possession of the West Sequoia League standings.
• September rolled around and DHS cross country runner Jonathan Padilla greeted the month with a win in the Beat the Heat Invitational.
Volleyball continued to have a great month as Orosi defeated Robert F. Kennedy to win its own tournament and the DHS squad went 4-1 at the McLane Tournament.
• In October, Samantha Mendoza and Elijah Mayberry were named the 2017-18 Athletes of the Year during.
The Dinuba High volleyball team pulled out home wins over Central Valley Christian and Immanuel High School setting the stage for the Central Section playoffs.
• November meant post season fever as well as transitioning to winter sports. The Dinuba High girls volleyball team put up one of the best seasons in school history as the Emperors made it to the semifinals of the Division 3 playoffs. The Emperors won two playoff home matches before being eliminated by eventual champion Yosemite.
The boys and girls cross country teams won league titles as Jonathan Padilla captured the individual crown.
In a Division 2 semifinals playoff football game, Dinuba came up short against top- seeded, and defending section champion, Tulare, 44-37.
Wrapping up the year in December, the Fresno State Bulldogs football team ended a historic season with 12 wins after defeating Arizona State in the Las Vegas Bowl. Former Dinuba High standout and Bulldogs quarterback Marcus McMaryion ended his career with one of the best seasons ever. McMaryion finished with 3,629 yards with 25 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Former Dinuba High wrestling standout, Isaiah Perez, captured his second straight state title as a member of the Fresno City College squad. The Rams alos went on to defend their state championship
Dinuba High boys basketball team captured the Kingsburg Lions Club tournament defeating Hanford, 47-40. Senior forward Luke Rodriguez was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Emperors also made it to the championship game of the Andrew Bedoya Holiday Classic. Dinuba fell to Central Valley Christian in the finale, 66-60.
The DHS girls soccer team, who won two matches last season, have won six matches that included winning their division at the Corcoran tournament.

Cal Ripken Baseball Sign-ups
Coming off a tremendous season in which Dinuba Cal Ripken captured the District 10 title and nearly a state title. Sign ups for the league will be held on January 19 & 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the gym at Dinuba Junior High in front of the gym. The league is geared for ages 5-12 and the season begins in February. Registration fee is $100. For more information, contact Jose Guido at 559-679-0474.
