The boy’s team captured first place at the event by earning 95 points, besting second place Lemoore by 31 points.
Helping the Emperors earn first place was senior returner Daniel Martinez, who ran a personal best in the Men’s 100-meter race to take first place with a time of 11.72 seconds. He also took first place in the 300m hurdles, something the Dinuba boys have excelled at for the past few years. He finished the hurdles with a time of 41.11

Dinuba boy’s basketball fall in quarter nals
Team nishes 20-9
Sentinel staff report
The Dinuba High varsity boy’s basketball team ended their season with the best record in four years, going 20-9 overall while finishing third in the Central Sequoia League. Their season came to an end last Thursday with an 83-66 loss to Mt. Whitney in the Division III quarterfinals.
The Emperors took a one- point lead into halftime on Thursday, leading the Pioneers 33-32 at the break. And though Dinuba was able to keep the score tight in the third quarter, an offensive onslaught by Mt. Whitney in the fourth quarter propelled the Pioneers to victory as they closed out the game by outscoring the Emperors 32-18 in the final quarter.
“Had an excellent group of kids to coach this year,” said Dinuba High basketball head coach Jeff Schofield, who returned to the position after having last coached them in 2014.
That year the team went 24-6 on the season and 8-3 in league play, finishing half a game behind first place Immanuel. They also fell one game short of the Valley championship game, falling to Roosevelt in the semifinals, and competed in the state playoffs but fell to Chaminade High in the first round.
“We are looking to having a big number of returners to build off of the momentum that we started this year,” said Schofield.

playoffs,” said Schofield. “They athletes, Schofield stressed
Other student-athletes recognized for their efforts in the classroom were Dinuba High wrestler Justin Miramontes, boy’s basketball junior Jacob Rodriguez, girl’s soccer junior Ashley Vargas and senior Maira Rojas (both with a 4.0 GPA) and boy’s soccer freshman Jose Chavez (4.0 GPA).
In recognizing Mayberry as the Most Valuable Player, Schofield credited him with being one of the team’s top defenders.
“He never shied away from a big assignment,” said Schofield. “He was a steady force for us.”
As for Dinuba High wrestling’s Emperor of the Year, coach Michael Wright said of Arreola, “I don’t think he’s missed a practice in two years, but if he wasn’t there, I don’t think practice would start... he leads everything for us and continues to be a leader.”
Dinuba High girl’s basketball coach Benny Prado honored two Most Valuable Players after having two players this year who really stood out. In recognizing Hernandez and Mendoza, Prado stated, “They really led us on and off the court, in good times and bad.”
Girl’s soccer coach Corrina Avey recognized Gonzalez as the Most Inspirational Player, saying, “Her love for the sport and for life does not go unnoticed. I watched her motivate players all season long.”
Of Dinuba High cheerleader Leal, coach Kayla Oliver said, “She’s there at every practice, even though she serves our community at Miss Dinuba.”
Dinuba High boy’s soccer assistant head coach Ignacio Tapia said of Rodriguez, “On and off the field, he’s a great person.”
kind of got the short end of the stick a little bit. But these boys pulled through with a lot of class and a lot of perseverance. I’m very proud of our boy’s soccer program and their continued success.”
Schofield also acknowledged the success of the school’s wrestling program that recently placed second in their division and 11th in the entire Central Section. Also, four Dinuba High wrestlers recently qualified to compete at the state championship.
In recognizing the student-
the importance of academic performance and acknowledged the programs that averaged a 3.00 GPA or better, those being girl’s soccer (3.10), cheer (3.17), boy’s basketball (3.24) and girl’s basketball having the highest (3.61). The girl’s average GPA, according to Schofield, was the fifth highest in the Central Section.
As for the top student-athlete, Dinuba High girl’s basketball sophomore forward Yasmine Villarreal-Harris took the top honors by maintaining a 4.29 GPA.

Mikala Montemayor
OROSI High SCHOOL SOCCER
Orosi High junior Mikala Montemayor was named Athlete of the Week for her performance last Friday in the Valley title girl's soccer game. Montemayor scored the lone goal against Sierra Paci c to claim a Valley title for the Lady Cardinals, the school's rst Valley champi- onship in any girl's sport.
Rick Curiel | The Sentinel
scored in the first four minutes when Orosi High senior Evelyn Manzo found teammate Victoria Quevedo on a cross pass in about 10 yards in front of the goal. Quevedo’s kick, however, sailed about two feet too high.
The game looked like it would remain scoreless going into the half, but deep in penalty time Montemayor found herself facing an empty Golden Bears backfield and stared down a goal straight on from about 15 yards out. Her kick had just enough lift to float past the outstretched hands of Sierra Pacific’s goalie to find the back of the net, giving Orosi a 1-0 lead just prior to halftime.
“It felt great!” said Montemayor about her goal after the game. “We work well together and there’s good communication.”
It would take all they had for the Lady Cardinals to hold on to that lead in the second half. Though having four shots at goal, including one blocked by Sierra Pacific’s goalie, Orosi could not add any more insurance to their lead and were forced to play defense.
The Golden Bears gave the crowd of about 2,000 fans a couple of scares late in the game. With just over 16 minutes left in the game, Sierra Pacific’s Sadie Ronquillo found herself the recipient of pass ten yards in front of Orosi’s goalie Mireya Lua.
The fans from the Sierra Pacific bleachers then roared as a quick strike got past Lua for seemingly the tying score. The goal, however, was waived off by the officials after Ronquillo was called for being offsides.
Then, as the teams were deep into penalty time and the Golden Bears desperately needing something to happen to give them a fighting chance, a second scare. In one last-ditch effort, Sierra Pacific again found themselves in striking distance with an empty backfield. The shot rolled
under Lua and was only partially blocked. As Lua turned to find the ball she found it rolling towards the goal line. Facing the opposite direction, Lua used the only part of her body close enough to prevent the tying goal. She stretched out her legs and curled the ball back into her body to stop it just before crossing.
“My heart dropped for a second,” said coach Vega. “It was nerve-wracking.”
Beyond their claim to fame now as Orosi High school’s first ever girl’s Valley championship in any sport, the Lady Cardinals will also go down in history as the only girls’ soccer team in the entire Central Section to finish the season undefeated.
Liberty High of Bakersfield, the section’s No. 1 ranked team finished 20-1-1 and Kingsburg, the No. 5 team, finished 25-1-1. Yet, in spite of the Lady Cardinals’ impressive overall record, the team finished as the No. 29 team in the Central Section, according to Maxpreps.
More importantly, the Lady Cardinals are young and strong. They are made up of five freshman, five sophomores, five juniors and four seniors. Needless to say, the team will definitely be a force to be reckoned with next year, and the years to come.
The team is made up of SayDee Alaca, Mireya Lua, Araceli Flores, Jacqueline Alberto, Stephanie Figueroa, Yulianna Cruz, Melanie Davila, Jocelyn Reynoso, Marissa Quezada, Mikala Montemayor, Evelyn Manzo, Karina Mondragon, Ashley Ruiz, Jeroldin Hernandez, Kimberly Caballero, Alexa Hernandez, Emily Gonzalez, Anapalmira Pena and Victoria Quevedo.
The Lady Cardinals will now wait for the state playoff seedings to come out to find out if they move on. According to Orosi High soccer assistant coach, Estevan Diaz, seeds 1-4 are guaranteed a spot in the state playoffs, but seeds 5 and lower are not. Seedings come out Tuesday, Mar. 6
