A Cutler man was arrested Feb. 23 for a 2016 murder in Orosi.
The murder, nearly two years prior on Feb. 27, 2016, occurred at approximately 2:26 p.m. in the area of Avenue 416 and Road 130. The victim, identified as Bryan Salazar, 18, of Orosi, was riding his bicycle when he was shot by the suspect. The victim was transported to a local hospital, but did not survive.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Department Violent Crimes Unit, assisted by the Tulare County Sheriff’s Gang and Narcotic Enforcement team, found new DNA evidence that
led to the arrest of Juan Jose Ballesteros, 20, of Cutler.

• The Alta District Historical Society will be hosting a slideshow presentation by Glenn and Mardelle Surabian on their trip to Armenia.
The event will be held March 2 at 6 p.m. at the ADHS White House Cultural Center at 275 South K Street. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

• Dinuba Adventist Church will be hosting violin virtuoso Jaime Jorge in concert on Saturday, March 3 at 5 p.m. The concert will celebrate “thirty years of incredible music.”
Dinuba Adventist Church is located at 325 North Eaton Avenue in Dinuba.
• The public is invited to “meet your assemblyman” on March 9. California 26th District Assemblyman Devon Mathis will meet with the public at Ridge Creek Golf Club Dinuba at 5:30 p.m. Mathis will share his vision and goals for the district and meet with the public.
Ridge Creek Golf Club is located at 3018 Ridge Creek Drive in Dinuba. Appetizers and refreshments will be provided.
• The Andrew Bedoya Memorial Scholarship Foundation will be holding its third annual fundraising dance and silent auction on March 24 at the Dinuba Memorial Building. Proceeds benefit the Andrew Bedoya Memorial Scholarship.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., the silent auction will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and the dance will be held from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
Tickets can be purchased in advance at Serrano’s Furniture in Dinuba for $20, or at the door for $25.
Business sponsors and donations for silent auction items are also being sought.

Months-long efforts by Dinuba GATE students were realized on Feb. 16 at the Tulare County National History Day competition - 15 local students were selected to advance to state competition. Three students, Dayana Chavez, Wendy Garcia and Andrea Parra, also earned scholarships.
This year’s theme is “Conflict and Compromise in History.” Competition categories included exhibit, performance, documentary, website design, historical paper and poster.

The Dinuba Sentinel was established on Feb. 11, 1909, then succeeding the Orosi Offer which was established on April 21, 1902, and on Jan. 15, 1917, the Dinuba Advocate. The latter, when established, absorbed The Traver Advocate, which was established Oct. 9, 1875. The Kingsburg Sentinel, which was established on Feb. 20, 1947, consolidated with the Dinuba Sentinel on Aug. 28, 1951. Reaffirmed as a legal publication under California statute and Tulare County Civil Code No. 19523 on April 2, 1928.
John Yoshio Matsuno was born on December 23, 1927 in Glendale, AZ. John passed away peacefully, on February 17, 2018, surrounded by family. At the age of 2, due to the death of his father, the family moved back to Hiroshima, Japan. A er the war, John returned back to the United States, where he worked several jobs, until establishing John’s Cafe, in 1964 in Dinuba, CA. John returned to Japan, and met his future wife, Emiko “Emi” Tamai. ey were married in 1959. During his 35 years as a restaurant owner, John and Emiko raised three daughters, Iris, Judy and Grace.
In 1999, John’s Cafe closed, due to ill health of Emi, much to the sadness of many of his loyal customers.
John is preceded in death by his wife, Emiko and survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Iris and Kli Justesen of Sanger, Judy and David Nakashima of Whittier, Grace and Art Sasaki of Fresno, and seven grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held at the Dinuba Buddhist Church on ursday, February 22, 2018 at 10:00 am.
