A 22-year-old man is in jail after turning himself in for fleeing the scene of a crash on 4th of July that took the life of a Dinuba woman, later identified as Fayth Chio Cerda.
Hector Castro Jr. of Lindsay turned himself in last Wednesday in connection with the death of 21-year-old Fayth Cerda who was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Jennifer Macia Magana of Sultana. Castro Jr. was traveling westbound on Avenue 408, east of Road 104 at a speed well above the posted 55 MPH speed limit when for an unknown reason struck Magana’s car that was traveling at a slower speed ahead of him. The force of the crash pushed the vehicle into a telephone pole before coming to a rest. Castro Jr’s vehicle came to rest without incident and he
exited the vehicle, fleeing from the collision and entering a two-door passenger car, according to a witness.
Castro Jr. responded to the Dinuba Police Department to come forward and provide information regarding his involvement in the fatal traffic collision earlier that day. Castro Jr. allegedly admitted that he was the driver involved in the fatal accident but he says he’d fallen asleep and thought he collided with a tree or telephone pole, according to the California Highway Patrol.
He says he was picked up by a friend and taken to Reedley with the intention of returning for his vehicle later in the day. Castro Jr. alleges he was unaware he had collided with another vehicle or caused a fatality.
The investigation is currently ongoing.
