yard sale advertisements. It covers all signage, both private and commercial. All of it is currently under review by city staff and last Tuesday the Dinuba Planning Commission participated in their second work session to address the matter.
During the session, the commissioners heard from Karl Schoettler, a planning consultant hired by the city of Dinuba to guide the city as
it looks to amend the ordinance.
“The current ordinance is about 30 pages long,” said Schoettler. “The biggest need is for more clarity and ease of use.”
During the
session, which
was open to
the public for comments,
Schoettler went
over a survey
recently given to
the planning commission and city staff to gather their opinion on various forms of signage.
Given the results, the city may be going more low-profile when it comes to the future signs of Dinuba. The survey found that when it came to commercial signage a monument style sign was preferred far more over traditional post-style signs.
Those taking the survey were asked to rate each type on a scale ranging from 1-10, the highest number representing the highest preference. The monument style, which is mounted at ground level, usually within a landscaped setting, received a rating of 8.6, whereas the pole- style signs received a rating of only 3.9.

Representing the downtown merchants at the work session was Dinuba Chamber of Commerce CEO Sandy Sills, along with local business advocate, Reda Bennani. Sills asked the commission
to consider the downtown merchants while moving forward with any revisions.
“Downtown is a different animal than El Monte,” said Sills. “I would ask you to consider the small budgets of many downtown business owners.

Schoettler is now working on a first draft of an amended sign ordinance and will bring it back to the planning commission for review. At that point, a third work session will be offered and the community will once again be given to an opportunity to offer their input during public comments.
After going through the planning commission, a second draft will then go the Dinuba City Council to be reviewed. Once the revised ordinance goes to council, the public will have one last opportunity to voice their concerns.
