In 2018, over 300 students graduated from Dinuba High School. The first graduating class, the class of 1902, had just six. Their class photo can be seen upon entering the Dinuba Branch Library.
They are part of a summer- long exhibit entitled ‘School Days of Yesterday,’ put on by the Alta District Historical Society. Old black-and-white photos and yearbooks from throughout the past century adorn the glass enclosure, giving viewers a sneak peek into the school days of old.
“There is so much history here,” said Alta District Historical Society’s Maribel Sorensen, who headed up the project.
Many of the items on display were gathered from the society’s museum, but others, like the photo of the graduating class of ‘02, were actually pulled from the Dinuba High School archive.
Also on display is a photo you may have seen before. The photo of Dinuba’s first elementary school, with its

grand architecture and immense tower at its center, has become iconic here in town. But what you may not know is why the school no longer stands.
Apparently, poor engineering or poor choice in material, led to the school becoming a danger to public safety. According to Roy Cotton of the historical society, the bricks used to build the school were not properly cured, and thus not strong enough to support the structure.
Said Sorensen of the building’s tower, “The students could actually climb the tower and would feel it swaying from side to side.”
The exhibit also has a photo of the Orosi High School football team from 1903. Front and center in the picture, holding the ball, is one Lee Ledbetter.
Those are just a few examples of the history contained in the glass cabinet of the Dinuba Branch Library. It will be on exhibit for about another month, when Sorensen and the Alta District Historical Society will move on to another display of Dinuba’s rich history, parades throughout the years - just in time for Raisin Day.
