The Lady Emperors varsity basketball team is off to a solid start after going 6-2 to start the season, their best start since the 2011-12 season when they opened up by going 7-1.
Dinuba opened up the season by beating Hanford West 57-38 on Nov. 27. The Lady Emperors outscored the Mustangs in every quarter, led by senior Mireya Hernandez, who scored 22 points for Dinuba in the opening game.
The team then went on to beat Kerman in a close game, winning 47-46 to open the Selma Shoot-Out Tournament on Nov. 29. The Lady Emps then lost to Fresno in another close matchup, falling to the Warriors 62-60.
Dinuba finished the tournament by beating Shafter 54-38 and then losing to a tough Sierra team, 49-37.
Since the Selma Tournament, the Lady Emperors have won three straight games, including a 55-26 blowout against Corcoran last Monday. They followed that up with another lopsided victory over Mt. Whitney last Tuesday, beating the Pioneers 53-35.
Dinuba traveled to Lemoore on Monday and beat the Tigers 56-34.
On Tuesday they traveled to take on the Tribe of Tulare Union. That game took place after publication.
Their next game will be against Kennedy High of Delano as they host the Dinuba-Orosi Holiday Classic starting on Wednesday. The tournament will last until Saturday, Dec. 23.

Dinuba senior Elijah Mayberry goes up for a shot against Hanford in last Friday’s semi-finals game of the Kingsburg Lions Club Tournament. Mayberry had 8 points in the 64-50 loss to the Bullpups. The Hanford defeat was the only loss for the Emperors this season.
The Dinuba High basketball team is off to a solid start this year, winning six of their first seven games to start the season.
Last week the team took third place in the annual Kingsburg Lions Club Basketball Tournament, after losing to Hanford in the semi-finals and then beating Golden West in the consolation round.
The Emperors entered the tournament with a 2-0 record after beating Tulare Union in their opening game and following that up with a 75-50 victory over Corcoran.
The tournament play began last Wednesday as they took on Lemoore. Junior Luke Rodriguez and sophomore Josh Magaña both put up 17 points for the Emperors. Dinuba led the Tigers by two points at halftime and then outscored Lemoore 20-15 in the third
The team went on to beat Golden West on Saturday to win third place in the consolation round. In that game, Mayberry scored 19 points as the Emperors beat the Pioneers 74-66.
On Monday the Emperors hosted Mission Oak and defeated the Hawks 65-58 to improve their season record to 6-1.

The Emperors then moved on to play Coalinga in the next round and easily handled the Horned Toads, outscoring them 23-9 in the first quarter and 21-0 in the third quarter to go on to a 65-34 victory.
With a 4-0 record, the Emperors went on to the semi-finals to play a tough Hanford team. This time it was the Bullpups who got the best of Dinuba in the first quarter. Hanford opened up by going on a 7-0 run and at one point led 15-1. Dinuba managed to cut into the lead with a turn-around jumper inside the paint by Rodriguez and a drive to the basket by Nate Carrion.
A pull-up jumper by Magaña at the end of the quarter cut Hanford’s lead to eight and provided some momentum that the Emperors carried into the second quarter.

The Orosi Cardinals varsity girl’s soccer team is undefeated to start the season and have two tournament championships under their belt after winning the Corcoran Tournament this past Saturday.
The Lady Cardinals won three straight games in a long day of soccer to win the tournament. They defeated Parlier 4-1 with two goals from freshman Stephanie Figueroa and a goal from senior Jocelyn Reynoso and junior Marissa Quezada.
The team then went on to beat Woodlake in dominant fashion, outscoring the Tigers 5-1. Orosi freshman Melanie Davila scored three goals in the game. The other two goals were scored by Figueroa and junior
Mikala Montemayor.
In the Lady Cardinals third game
the team took on Dinuba, and though it was a closer contest, Orosi defeated the Emperors 2-0 to advance to the championship game. Scoring for Orosi was Davila and sophomore Emily Gonzalez.
Defense helped the Lady Cardinals earn their second tournament championship of the season, as sophomore goal keeper Mireya Lua had four saves in the team’s championship game against Granite Hills, including a penalty kick. The team went on to defeat the Grizzlies 4-1.
The Lady Cardinals will be off during winter break and will return to the field on Jan. 5 when they travel to Dinuba for a rematch game against the Emperors. That game begins at 5 p.m.

The Dinuba High varsity soccer team took second place in last weekend’s Jim Ingils Soccer Tournament in Lemoore by beating Chowchilla, Orosi and Mendota before falling to El Diamante in the Championship game on Saturday.
On Friday, the Emperors found themselves trailing 1-0 to Chowchilla at halftime in their opening round game. The Emperors responded in the second half by putting a lid on the Tribe’s offense and scoring three unanswered goals to win the game 3-1.
Dinuba senior Pedro Rodriguez scored the tying goal in the second half. Junior Ivan Hernandez and senior Leo Jimenez added the second and third goals to take the win and advance to the first bracket finals against Orosi.
The rivalry game against the Cardinals was as tight as one might have expected, with both teams scoring two goals in the first half. But in the second half it was the Emperors who were able to capitalize by scoring the only goal of the second half to win 3-2 and advance to the finals.
On Saturday, Dinuba defeated Mendota 2-1 in the semifinals before losing 3-0 to El Diamante in the championship game, earning them a second place finish in the tournament.
As of Tuesday, the Emperors varsity soccer team was 4-4- 2. They hosted Tulare Western on Tuesday evening. That game took place after publication.
Today Dinuba travels to Fresno to take on Washington Union in a non-league game before heading into winter break. Their next game will be on Jan. 3 at Granite Hills in Porterville. They will then host Orosi on Jan 5.
The victory earned them a first round championship game against Dinuba. However, the Cardinals fell to the Emperors after Dinuba scored the winning goal in the second half to win 3-2. Orosi then lost 2-0 to Redwood.
