Emperors
Sentinel staff report
Three Dinuba High wrestlers finished in the top five at the recent Chukchansi Invitational, held at Madera South last Friday and Saturday.
Dinuba’s Lorenzo Arreola finished in second place in the 113 lb. weight class, while senior Daniel Long earned a third place finish at 170 lbs. Julius Rangel finished in fifth place at 182 pounds.
Also finishing strong for the Emperors was Angel Del Torro, who finished in eighth place in the 106 lb. weight class.
As a team, the Emperors finished in 14th place out of 51 schools.
The Dinuba JV wrestling team traveled to Woodlake on Saturday to compete in the Woodlake Invitational and had four wrestlers finish in the top five. Dinuba’s Chris Maldonado took first place at 182 lbs. At 113 lbs., Emperor Mathew Montalvo earned second place while his teammate Braulio Torres finished in third place at the 170 lb. level. Dinuba’s Zeke Nelson took fourth place at 195 lbs.
The Dinuba wrestling team will compete next at the California Classic in Reedley on Saturday.
As for team Dinamite, Dinuba’s local youth/junior high wrestling team, the team placed sixth out of 26 teams at the recent Quintana Classic in Selma. The team had four wrestlers finish in the top five.
Dinuba’s Coen Quintana took first place in the 6th-8th grade 95 lb. weight division. In the same grade level, Dinuba’s Jose Martinez took second place in 205 lb. weight class and Cannen Quintana finished in third place at 76 lbs.
And in the 3rd-5th grade level, Dinuba’s Chris Arreola took second place at the 62 lb. weight level.
Also, former Dinuba High standout wrestler Isaiah Perez competed for Fresno City College this past Saturday at the junior college State Championship in Stockton and won the state championship at the 133 lb. weight division.
Perez defeated Pedro Corona of Bakersfield by opening up with an escape point, followed by a takedown. He added a two- point near-fall with just under a minute left in the second period to take a 5-0 lead. A third period takedown gave Perez a 7-1 victory and earned him, and the Fresno City College wrestling team, a state title.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Magaña pulled Dinuba to within four points, at 15-19, and the Emperors managed to keep up with the Bullpups with a much better offensive effort.
Dinuba closed out the first half by going on a 9-0 run, including a 3-pointer from the top of the key by junior Jacob Huerta and a steal and lay-up by senior Elijah Mayberry that fell just before the buzzer to tie the game at 34-34.
The Emperors stayed in the game in the third quarter and found themselves once again tied with Bullpups near the end of the quarter. A 3-pointer by Hanford with just three seconds left in the quarter, however, gave the Bullpups a 46-43 lead.
Hanford then went on a 14-0 run to open the fourth quarter and Dinuba had a hard time getting back in the game. The Emperors were outscored in the final quarter 18-7 as Hanford went on to win the game 64-50.
Magaña finished with 13 points in the game and Huerta contributed 12 points.
The loss to Hanford put the
Emperors in the consolation round against Golden West of Visalia. And though the Trail Blazers led most of the game, a 30-point fourth quarter, including 15 points by Rodriguez, helped propel the Emperors past Golden West for a 74-66 victory.
Rodriguez ended up with 28 points in the game. Mayberry finished with 19 points and Magaña added another 14 points. Magaña was also named to the all-tournament team for his performance throughout the tournament.
“We are playing unselfish and moving the ball pretty well on offense,” said Dinuba High basketball coach Jeff Schofield. “We have a lot to improve on, including rebounding and decision-making.”
The Emperors hosted Mission Oak on Monday in a non-league matchup. Dinuba beat the Hawks 65-58.
Currently, Dinuba is hosting the Andrew Bedoya Holiday Classic. The tournament started yesterday and will last until Saturday.
