Reedley, Valley again receive ‘F’ grade regarding tobacco use
Staff, Contributed Report
Reedley and most Fresno County cities and towns received “F” grades in the 2019 American Lung Associa- tion State of Tobacco Control report.
The reports, released on Jan. 30, once again took Fresno County cities to task for their failure to re- duce smoking among residents and control air quality. Of the 16 coun- ties graded, 14 (including Reedley)
received an F in the report. Conversely Califoornia as a whole was praised by the association for statewide attempts to reduce and prevent tobacco use. But officials voiced a concern about the number
of young people using e-cigarettes. “We are proud that California continues to make progress in ad- dressing the lung health of its peo- ple, Lindsey Freitas, senior director of advocacy for the American Lung
Association in California, said in the Jan. 30 news release. “By pass- ing a strong tobacco tax in 2016, continuing to support coverage of smoking cessation programs and other key quit tools and standing up to the billions spent in lobbying by Big Tobacco, the state remains a leading nationwide advocate for healthy lungs and clean air.”
In Reedley’s overall F score, the lung association gave a D grade for
smoke-free outdoor air. The highest score in that category came from the smoking ban in recreational ar- eas. The city received F scores for smoke-free housing and reducing sales of tobacco products.
Parlier was one of two county cities not given an F grade. The city received a D grade while Fire- baugh was given a C grade. Parlier received an A grade from the lung association for its efforts in reduc-
ing sales of tobacco products.
The 17th annual “State of Tobac- co Control” report grades states and the federal government on policies proven to prevent and reduce tobacco use. It finds California among the top states in the nation in several key ar- eas, but the rating hinges on state of- ficials continuing to act to implement strict measures to prevent youth smoking, e-cigarette use and multi-
unit housing protections.
