Head-on crash Feb. 4 on Highway 180 kills 2
Staff Report
Two men — an off-duty veteran Fresno police offi- cer and a wrong-way driver — were killed in a head-on crash on Highway 180 north of Sanger on Feb. 4.
The accident at about 5 p.m. just west of McCall Avenue claimed the life of 48-year-old Phia Vang, a 26-year veteran of the police department, The wrong-way

back in San Diego.”
Since 2013, Buckley has
worked as an assistant su- perintendent as well as vice president of academic affairs at Santa Clarita Community College. He also served as vice president of instruction at the San Diego Community College District as well as Grossmont Cuyamaca Com- munity College District.
One of the first questions each candidate was asked was: “Why do you want to be the next president of Reedley College?
“You’re all probably ask- ing, why you?” Buckley said. “Why are you here?”
He mentioned in his re- sponse that he’s worked in both healthcare and higher education.
“Just for a moment, what do those two careers actually have in common?,” he said. “People. So, I’d like to show that through my actions, I have shown that I care about people.”
Buckley said he would like his last assignment to be at a college where he felt he could make a lasting impact.
“In a classroom, I only served 50 people at a time,” he said. “When I moved into my deans role, I multiplied that by about a factor of 10. When I became a vice presi- dent, again that number was factored by 10 in terms of im- pact. You invest your time in a college campus, you invest your time in people.”
Berry’s response to the same question also had to do with helping people of the Reedley College community better themselves.
“Well, I want to be the next president of Reedley College because I believe in affecting change and I be- lieve in the improvement of lives on a larger scale,” she said. “I’ve always thought
driver was identified by the Fresno County coroner’s of- fice as 33-year-old Cameron Pryor of Fresno.
Reports from witnesses and the California Highway Patrol indicated that Pryor was driving a pickup truck at excessive speed and reckless east on 180 toward Sanger. He apparently drift- ed into the westbound lanes of the four-lane expressway and crashed head-on into
that Reedley College was a hidden gem, I’ve always said that, we’re a hidden gem here in the Valley.”
Another key question for the candidates was how they planned to prepare students entering the workforce.
“I believe the programs here are already recog- nized,” said Buckley. “Mak- ing sure that those programs have the proper technology and resources to teach stu- dents is critical. If you stay static, everybody is able to march beyond you. You need to watch where that horizon is and be able to reevaluate where you are and what you want to achieve.”
Berry said curriculum is important in helping students succeed.
“The curriculum and our educational programs are our heart, but our budget is our conscience,” she said. “We also need to remember that. The educational programs are the heart of our existence here, they lead to an educated citizenry for the individuals who are going to return to the community and become mem- bers of our community.”
Candidates also talked about dual enrollment as well as expanding the various pro- grams at the college and how they would help to set Reed- ley College apart from its sis- ter campuses.
The selection of both the Reedley College and Madera Community College Center presidents will be announced during the Tuesday, March 5 Board of Trustee meeting. The meeting will be held in the Reedley College Student Cen- ter and will begin at 4:30 p.m.
The president of the Madera campus will answer to the Reedley College presi- dent until Madera officially becomes its own independent college.
