Reed Avenue, north of Manning Avenue, shows the completed rebuilt roadway to Aspen Avenue. Con- struction crews completed the project earlier in the month, which repaved and restriped the roadway in both directions. Before the road was rebuilt, electrical wiring was placed underground along the street.
Sheriff’s deputies exchange gunfire with Squaw Valley man
Social Services warns of text message scam

Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies took a 53-year-old Squaw Valley man into cus- tody after exchanging gunfire at his foothill home on Nov. 25.
The man was at the hos- pital undergoing a mental evaluation, according to Tony Botti, sheriff ’s spokesman. Once released, the man was to be booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of as- sault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and negli- gently discharging a firearm inside a home.
A sheriff ’s office news release stated that shortly before 10 p.m., a man called the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office to report strange ac- tivity taking place outside his house in the 35000 block of George Smith Road in Squaw Valley. According to the news release, the man claimed he was witnessing about a dozen people who were tearing up his property and killing his animals. He told dispatchers he was armed with a gun and would defend himself.
As deputies responded to the scene, they learned the
man’s adult son also was in- side the house. The man con- tinued to speak with dispatch- ers over the phone, but was not making sense.
Deputies arrived and fo- cused on trying to safely get the man’s son out of the home, the news release stated. How- ever, their efforts were de- layed once they heard several gunshots being fired inside the home and they could not determine exactly where the suspect was located.
About 30 minutes later, dispatchers were able to call the suspect’s son. They en- couraged him to get out of the house. The younger man eventually walked out of the home and met deputies by their patrol vehicles. A short time later, the man fired out of the house toward deputies. Two deputies returned fire with the suspect. None of the deputies were struck.

The Fresno County Department of Social Services is warning people about a text mes- sage scam targeting social services clients.
While there have yet to be any cases reported in Fresno County up to this point, clients and other individuals in neighboring areas have reported receiving text mes- sages prompting them to call regarding Cal- WORKs, a public assistance program that provides cash aid and services to eligible families that have a child or children in the home.
Upon calling the number, an automated system prompts them to enter personal in- formation such as EBT card number, PIN, date of birth, and/or Social Security Number.
In some cases, calls may be answered by a live person who may also be fraudulently representing themselves as social services staff.
The department is stressing to the public that these text messages are not originating from the Fresno County DSS. Should you receive a suspicious text message or phone call, do not give out your personal informa- tion including your EBT personal identifi- cation number. Fresno County DSS would never ask for a client’s PIN.
To report issues, cancel cards, or change a personal PIN, clients may call the EBT Customer Service Line, toll free at 1-877- 328-9677. Clients may also contact Fresno County DSS directly, toll free at 1-855-832- 8082 to report any issues.

Gloria Jones June 23, 1927 - October 24, 2018
Gloria Jones was born to Paul and Clara Daigle on June 23, 1927 in Limestone, Maine, the 10th of 12 children. She passed away peacefully on October 24, 2018 at her home in Reedley CA. Gloria attended local schools
and graduated from Limestone High School in 1944. She entered the nursing program at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Portland, ME and graduated in 1947. A er receiving her nursing license she worked as a civilian nurse at the 1604 Medical Squadron, Kindley Air Force Base, Bermuda Islands. It was here that she met her future hus- band, Clinton Jones. ey were married on December 18, 1952. A er a short stay with Gloria’s family in Maine and spending about a year with Clint’s family in Selma, CA, they nally settled in Reedley, CA. In the early 60’s Gloria worked as an RN at the old Reedley Hospital’s maternity ward on Reed Ave. In August 1968, she began her career
at Sierra View Homes. She was promoted to Director of Nursing in November 1968 and was further promoted to Nursing Home Admin- istrator in July 1973. She retired a er a 24-year career with Sierra View Homes in November 1992.
Clint and Gloria had seven children between the years 1953 and 1962. Our fondest memories revolve around family activities: e an- nual summer vacations to Camp Fresno at Dinkey Creek with nightly games around the camp re; Mom attended many of our Little League games where she always cheered us on heartily; Christmas get-aways to Cayucos were always anticipated and enjoyed by all. Mom was a life-long member of the Catholic Church, and we well remember being adorned in our best clothes as mom herded us all down the sidewalk to Sunday Mass.
A er retirement, mom busied herself for years with genealogical research. ese were the pre-Internet days when mom and dad made trips back East to mom’s birthplace, to various research libraries including the Mormon Church. She accumulated boxes of books and documents to follow the ancestral lines of familial relationships. She was able to trace her family roots all the way back to the 1500’s in Normandy, France.
Gloria is preceded in death by her husband Clint, who passed away on November 6, 2005.
Gloria is survived by all of her children: Sons: Ted Jones, his wife Vikki (Joyner) and their children CJ and Kelli; Dan Jones, his wife Nancy (Murdock) and their children Alison and Garett; Bruce Jones, his wife Kel- ly (Worthington) and their children Lindsey a n d S t e p h a n i e . D a u g h t e r s : P a u l a M a r i e J o n e s and her friend Stephen Sayward; Karen Jones; Laura Jones, her partner Paul Finck and her children Casey and Noah; Janet (Jones) Wagster. She is also survived by 9 great grand children.
e Jones family wishes to thank the car-
ing and compassionate sta from Home Instead Senior Care for their invaluable help during mom’s 5-year decline from Alzheimer’s. We would also like to thank Hinds Hospice for their loving care during mom’s nal weeks.
