I write to this newspaper with a great concern for the residents of Dinuba. My name is Reyes, I am a graduate from Fresno State University, a resident of Visalia and a community liaison for just about every town in the valley.
I am a student intern with a local community group called Valley Forward. We advocate for safer neighborhoods and better jobs for working families. This civic engagement is accomplished through meaningful door-to-door conversations with our neighbors. Every town I visit has a story to tell. Some stories narrate what is working well in the neighborhoods. But, others show concerns or issues that need to be addressed.
Issues that put the neighbors on guard, such as the city of Madera’s businesses closing out due to big box stores invading their market. Or the city of Coalinga, whose parks need improvement. Even the town of Firebaugh, whose neighbors believe many more extracurricular activities are needed to keep the kids off the streets. Each town paints their own narrative picture, one door at a time.
Dinuba, too, has its own narrative, a
narrative that we saw within a few weeks in the neighborhood. This issue is important due to the timing of the year. After talking with hundreds of Dinuba residents, we heard that voters are being confused about their polling locations. They are receiving green or blue post cards with language that they’re interpreting as “there will be no polling location”, “there is not enough voters to justify a polling location” and “everyone must vote by mail this year”.
Those are the quotes that Valley Forward heard from the Dinuba residents. Some neighbors were telling us other interpretations, “no more vote
by mail this year”, “we must vote in Visalia”. The scariest one yet, “voting has been canceled this year for Dinuba”.
The wording on these mailer notes needs to be reconsidered. We need wording that explicitly states that voting will move forward. I believe that voter suppression is real, it exists in almost
infinite ways. Whether it is last minute polling location change, requiring a voter ID, or long lines at the polls, these tactics continue to threaten voter turnout.
This election will be one of the greatest elections in decades. The possibility for improvement is huge. This is my call to action for Dinuba residents, and everyone as well, VOTING is a right for us! NOTHING can prevent your ballot from arriving in your mailbox. I urge people to exercise their constitutional rights, despite of any obstacle they may face. If your ballot is in a language you do not understand, demand it changed.
If you do not understand propositions, take the time to read the description well from your voter material. Do not have transportation to the polls? Do not have time? Going to be out of town on the day of the election? Register to vote by mail! You can still vote at the polls on the day of election, and you can receive your ballot up to an entire month before the election. Time to show our voice as concerned neighbors.
In all my experience as a community organizer, I have seen many issues that plague towns. Issues such as safety from misunderstood youth, homeless people needing help and lack of road safety, are all very legitimate reasons for concern.
November 6, election day, is just around the corner, thus I wish to bring forth an issue that Dinuba residents are facing, and maybe other town residents as well.
This is voter suppression in the form of voter confusion. People are receiving mail cards, green or blue, that indicate polling location change. The language on these cards are causing confusion. Ballots will continue to arrive to your mailbox and voting will never be canceled.
Do not forget to vote on November 6th, show your voice, regardless of any obstacle!
Paola Collado received the Shirley Bolton Memorial Scholarship.
Mary Rosario Filarca received the Associated Student Government Scholarship.
Antonio Diaz received the Osher Foundation Scholarship.
