“Listen to me!”
a teenager that the truth is usually found somewhere in the middle between the
two extremes. Imagine what it would do
if Christian political leaders got together and listened to one another to the degree that they found solutions somewhere in the middle. Actually pretty hard to imagine.
The Bible has quite a lot to say about listening. One search that I checked revealed 412 references to listening in the Bible. One of the most frequently quoted is: “Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” from the Apostle James. Listening was kind of a major theme with James and being our Lord’s brother, it would seem
he was probably speaking from personal experience. (One wonders: did he learn listening the hard way as a teenager with older brother Jesus?) He also said: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.”(1:22) The writer of Proverbs also chimes in on it: “let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance,”(1:5) and “to answer before listening— that is folly and shame.”(18:13)
But of all the other references to listening, my favorites are those spoken
by Jesus himself or about Jesus himself. Such as: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me;”(Jn10:27) and “Everyone on the side of truth listens
to me.”(Jn18:37) and “This is my Son, whom I
love. Listen to him!”(Mk9:7) Those verses (and others like them) show that the really important application of listening is listening to Jesus himself.
Are you listening? Listen!

“You’re not listening!” or “You’re not hearing me!”
“Have you heard anything I’ve said?” “All I ask is that you listen to what I’m

from spouses, from people we work with, from TV characters...you name it—we’ve heard it. But, somehow, we didn’t hear what was said just before those statements. Was it a matter of focus? Distraction? Day- dreaming? Preoccupation with something more pressing, or at least more interesting? Why do we have such a hard time listening? Is it because we are so anxious to speak? To get our turn? To put in our two cents?
And, returning to last week’s context
of politics: what a world of difference it would be if politicians in particular and the rest of us in general would take the time to really listen to one another. To listen to the extent that we thoroughly understand one another’s perspective;
not just getting ourselves ready to make our own arguments. I heard a podcast the other day in which the speaker said that for years he has been intentionally reading two opposing newspapers and weekly news magazines. He understood even as

How? Two main disciplines: Scripture reading and prayer.
How? By taking time. By lingering in prayer. By quieting yourself enough that you get much of the other noise out of you. By asking questions of what you read: how does it specifically apply to you? What should you do about it? “What would Jesus do?” Is there anyone you need to tell? By concentrated prayer—also called fasting. The addition of hunger pangs in your gut can do wonders for your persistence and focus in prayer.
Here’s what I’ve also found: as you become a better listener of God, you also become a better listener to those around you. You want to have lots of friends? Learn to be a good listener.
