Sentinel staff report
Since mid-November of 2018, the California High Patrol Dispatch Center has received numerous 911 calls of suspicious people posing as disabled motorists in order to receive money from passing motorists, officers say.
According to the CHP, the vehicles have been described as dark colored SUVs, many of which have out of state license plates.
Officers say that in the reported cases, if motorists don't stop, a male jumps in front of the vehicle. They reportedly tell people they want to sell gold jewelry for money to get home, to feed their family, or for fuel for their vehicle.
The suspects have also reportedly asked for motorists to go to an ATM to get cash for them. When victims refuse, the subjects have reportedly become aggressive and some people have been chased. Reports
Arrests
have been made in various cities and freeways throughout the Central Valley.
The CHP is currently conducting an investigation into these reports and is seeking the assistance of the public. If you have been contacted by subjects matching the description, or you have purchased jewelry from the subject in exchange for cash or fuel, please contact the CHP at 262- 0400.
