Future of Lady Cardinals soccer looks bright
A junior varsity Lady Cardinal soccer player takes aim at one of four goals the team scored in a shut out victory over Farmersville on Monday. With the victory, like their varsity counterparts, the JV Lady Cardinals also finished the season undefeated in league.

seasons since bringing Vega, the team has gone 59-14-3.
Said Orosi High Athletic Director Ken Sawatzky, “Since Sara took over... every year has gotten better. What I’ve noticed is these girls are on a mission. They’re so focused.”
Said Vega of her team, “These girls, they get along very well. There’s so much cohesiveness with all these girls... It’s such a pleasure to see them win this as friends, and as teammates.”
With the league title and their No. 1 ranking in Division V, the Lady Cardinals will have home field advantage throughout the
playoffs. Despite having the only undefeated record in the valley, Orosi will enter the playoffs as the 31st ranked team in the Central Section (according to Maxpreps).
But seeing how the team is young, strong and deep, the chances of Orosi moving up in division are likely if they keep up their success. That move, however, would not happen for at least another two years, as according Sawatzky the team is locked into the division for the next two seasons.
Orosi will host their first playoff game on Wednesday.
done early, scoring three goals in the first half, while once again keeping the Aztecs out of the goal.
Four minutes into the game, Orosi junior Mikala Montemayor was the first to strike for the Lady Cardinals, using her body to bounce a corner kick pass into the goal at close range.
Ten minutes later Orosi would capitalize on another corner kick. This time it was sophomore Anapalmira Pena who was the benefactor. Pena’s kick to the front of the goal bounced around briefly in front of the goal before finding its way back to her on the perimeter. With no one in front of her and a tight window to the goal, Pena kicked a low-flying ball that found it’s way past the outstretched hands of Farmersville’s goalie and into the opposite end of the goal for Orosi’s second score of the game.
Orosi’s third goal came just two minutes later by the Lady Cardinal’s leading scorer, freshman Melanie Davila who drove one in from nearly 20
yards out.
Defense would secure the
win for the Lady Cardinals in the second half as junior goalie SayDee Alcala was able to stave off the Aztec’s shot attempts with five saves.
Monday’s home game against Farmersville was also Senior Night for the Lady Cardinals. Four seniors were honored in what was an emotional pregame ceremony. Those honored were Karina Mondragon, Jackie Alberto, Jocy Reynoso and team captain Evelyn Manzo. “I’m very glad as a senior to have (this) experience with all these girls,” said Manzo. “I have so much fun playing with them.”
As for what’s ahead for the team and their chance at another run to a valley title game, Manzo said, “We’re very hungry. We are not done here.”
When Orosi hired Vega, who actually grew up in the area before attending high school in Visalia, the girl’s soccer team was coming off a string of losing seasons. Prior to Vega, the team had gone 16-38-3 in the prior three seasons. In the three

night off an offensive rebound, giving Dinuba a 55-45 lead. The offensive rebound was one of 19 for the team on Friday, giving the Emperors much needed second opportunities.
“We did a better job on the boards,” said Schofield. “We only allowed them one offensive rebound.”
Free throws would then put the game on ice.
In last Wednesday’s game the Dinuba Emperors took on the Cavaliers of Central Valley Christian for the third time this year. And, as has become customary in their matchups this year, the third game was again a close one.
Also, as in the last two matchups, it was the Emperors who walked away victorious after pulling out at 63-57 overtime win over CVC at home.
Dinuba carried a slim 25-22 lead into halftime and also led by two points going into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter, both teams struggled to put up significant points, but it was the Cavaliers who scored more, 9-7, to push the game into overtime.
In overtime, both teams picked up the pace on offense. However, to come away with the win, the Emperors did what they’ve done in their previous games against the Cavaliers, hit clutch shots when needed down the wire.
This time it was Dinuba High junior Jacob Huerta hitting
two big 3-pointers in overtime to help secure the win for the Emperors. He finished with 11 points.
Senior Nate Carrion led the Emperors in scoring with 22 points, including shooting 15 of 15 from the free throw. In addition, Carrion also hauled in six rebounds.
Sophomore Josh Magaña finished with 12 points and senior Elijah Mayberry added nine points for Dinuba.
This week will mark the toughest challenge for Dinuba in their quest for a league title. Though it would take an upset or two, and a little help from others, Dinuba is still mathematically in the hunt to finish in first in the CSL. They are two games behind Selma with three games remaining.
Dinuba would need a win against Immanuel on Tuesday and then hope to upset Selma at home tonight for a chance at a league title. Selma is currently undefeated in league.
“We’re not too concerned about that,” said Schofield of the team’s chances. “Right now we’re just trying to get better.”
Tonight’s varsity game against the Bears is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
On Saturday Dinuba will host Reedley in a make-up game that was originally scheduled for the beginning of the season. Saturday’s varsity game has an earlier start time of 6 p.m.

The Orosi Cardinals varsity boy’s basketball team had four players score in double figures on Friday night to easily defeat Summit Charter Collegiate Academy 78-37.
Orosi sophomores Jose Ramos and Arzel Quicio were the top two scorers with 18 and 17 points respectively. Senior Frederick Andres had 11 points and junior Juan Manzo finished with 10 points.
The Cardinals will have their final league game on Tuesday in a home game against Wonderful College Prep Academy.

game in the third quarter after Dinuba’s offense sputtered, only putting up five points in the quarter. By comparison, the Vikings couldn’t miss and put up their best offensive period of the game with 29 points.
Though Dinuba competed better in the fourth quarter, by that time the damage was too severe and Kingsburg ended up winning by 24 points, marking the Lady Emperor’s second worst defeat of the season.
The team won their first league game convincingly against CVC back on Jan . 11, beating the Cavaliers by 30 points. Since then the Lady Emperors have gone 1-4 in league, starting with a close loss to Kingsburg back
on Jan. 17, losing 50-46.
They then dropped the next two games, one
to Immanuel and the other to league leader Selma before getting back in the win column with a 55-47 win over Exeter on Jan. 25.
Last Wednesday the Lady Emperors hoped to keep the momentum going with a team they easily handled in their first league victory, CVC. But this time around, the story was much more like that of their male counterparts.
The game with the Cavaliers was a close on that went down to the wire, with both teams locked at 54 points each with just over a minute left in the game. But a 3-pointer

by CVC’s Karly De Jong ended up being the difference in the game, and the Cavaliers won the game 57-54.
The Lady Emperors played Immanuel on Tuesday. That game took place after publication.
They have two games remaining in league play. Today they will travel to play league leader Selma and their final league game will be this coming Wednesday when they host Exeter.
That game will also honor the Lady Emperors seniors. Both tonight’s and Wednesday’s games are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
