Deputies arrest Parlier man after pursuit extends to Fowler
MVT Staff Report
Fresno County Sheriff's deputies arrested a Parlier man last week after he led police on a high-speed chase from Parlier to Fowler, then barricaded himself in a gas station convenience store.
Julio Cerda, 24, was booked into the county jail on June 15 on charges of evading police and obstructing an officer. Cer- da, who has outstanding war- rants for resisting arrest and
a parole violation, had a bail of $115,000 but was not allowed bail because of a parole hold.
At about 10 p.m. on June 14, Parlier Police officers at- tempted a traffic stop of Cer- da, who was driving a Hyun- dai. Cerda fled the scene and led police on a pursuit west on Manning Avenue that reached speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, according to a sher- iff's office news release.
Fresno County Sheriff's deputies assisting in the pur-
suit placed a
spike strip at Manning and McCall av-
enues. Cerda struck the
strip and one
of his tires
blew out, but
he continued to drive at about 25 mph.
While he was being pursued by law enforcement, Cerda called dispatchers and claimed that he was armed and ready
to shoot it out with police and then kill himself. Cerda even- tually stopped his vehicle at Manning and Fowler avenues, but failed to follow officers' commands to surrender and continued driving toward town at slow speeds.
Two FCSO deputies then used pursuit intervention technique maneuvers to dis- able Cerda's vehicle. Cerda exited the vehicle ran through a Chevron gas station parking lot and then barricaded him-
self inside the store. Employees and custom-
ers evacuated the store, and a deputy with the FCSO Cri- sis Negotiation Team con- tacted Cerda inside an office. Ultimately, pepper ball was launched into the office, and Cerda surrendered to depu- ties at about 10:50 p.m.
Sheriff's officials said Cer- da was armed with a knife, and dropped the weapon before being arrested. A gun was not found in his possession.
