if that person knows we are only charging her $25 a week they could say why does this person pay this rate and you’re making me pay something different?”
The new rate offered to Ambriz reflects a prorated rate of the facilities normal rental fee for the large hall, which rents for $675 for a five-hour period. The problem for Ambriz is that the class doesn’t bring in nearly that much in a given session.
She says she may get anywhere from 20 to 25 students per class, on a good night, and pulls in anywhere from $40 to $60. That money, says Ambriz, all goes back to the class in the way of incentives.
“I charge a small amount because if it was free the people wouldn’t get motivated,” Ambriz explained. “The money that

“I am a living example that it does not matter what role you play in the education field,” stated Juarez. “You can always make a difference in a child’s life.”
Juarez thanked the Cutler Orosi Joint Unified School District and
Superintendent Yolanda Valdez for his nomination that allowed him to serve the children in the community of Cutler-Orosi.
Ang has worked for COJUSD for 11 years and currently serves as the coach for the high school’s Science Olympiad team and advisor to the Math Club that has seen an increase in members from 15 to 160.
“Mrs. Ang is the epitome of what it means to be a servant leader,” stated OHS principal Roberto Vaca. “She takes her teaching role very seriously and is always going above and beyond
to do what is best for students. I can always count on Mrs. Ang and is not afraid to roll up her sleeves to serve students in other capacities such as Science Olympiad, Math Club and also coordinates our Saturday School program. We are blessed to have Mrs. Ang as a teacher at Orosi High School.”
Finalists for school employee recognition was Macario Lopez of Dinuba Unified School District. Nominees for the awards from both school districts included Faith Price (COJUSD) and Martha Sawatzky (DUSD).
we do bring in goes to things like t-shirts, water bottles, deodorants, little things that we use to keep them motivated.”
Though the board offered her the smaller banquet room for her classes, something that would be much cheaper at $65 per session, Ambriz said that would still be too expensive for her to keep holding her classes there.
“Unfortunately, the way it was done before was not done in compliance,” said Padilla of the boards decision. “We have to be good stewards of tax payers money. It is important to protect the Memorial Building, its staff and board members of any future discriminatory lawsuits.”
Padilla went on to add, “We want the classes to continue. We really do. We just need to make sure it’s done right.”
The board even discussed the option of hiring Ambriz to give the classes out of the hall, relieving her of the rental fees as an employee. However, the board could not justify the move because the classes would still not pay for the hall to break even on paying her salary.
In addition to the new rate for usage, Ambriz was also required to provide liability insurance for her classes, something she secured recently. But for Ambriz and her class, the search now begins for a new facility.
“My class told me that they would follow me wherever I go,” said an emotional Ambriz at last week’s board meeting. Asked what the next step would be for her, Ambriz held back the tears and responded with a simple, “I don’t know. I just can’t afford it.”
