Community member gathered recently for a VIP Waiters Dinner, hosted by the Dinuba Woman's Club, to raise money for Relay for Life of Dinuba.
Fundraisers abound for Relay for Life of Dinuba
By Karen Fier
VIP Waiter lunch meeting has become a yearly event that club members and guests look forward to each year. A special thank you went out to Linda Conklin, club president and her committee for making this successful fundraiser possible.
In another recent event, the Dinuba Christian Church hosted a fundraiser through the combined efforts of Relay team “Dinuba Unified School District Friends and Family” and members of the Dinuba Christian Church.
According to Sandy Seitz, captain of the Relay For Life team, “the church was delighted
to share a beautiful afternoon with family and friends. We raised $1,000 at our first annual chili cook off and four people joined our Dinuba Unified Friends and Family team. We can’t wait to continue our fund raising efforts to help fight cancer for the American Cancer Society. We had over 75 people enjoy a delicious dinner followed by the making of many luminarias in memory and honor of our loved ones. We hope to see you on April 13th at Dinuba High School for a wonderful day celebrating a cure for cancer.”
Wondering how you can
support the fight against cancer? Here are several fun opportunities open to the community:
• Saturday, March 23rd (10:00 am – 2:00 pm), “Fill the Bucket/Boot” – Relay For Life participants will be at the intersections of Tulare & L Streets and El Monte & Crawford collecting donations.
• Saturday, March 30th (8:00 am) – 6th Annual 5K Walk/Run will be held at Ridge Creek Golf Club.
• Saturday, March 30th (4:00 pm–6:00pm)–aPaintNite will be held at M&J Family Restaurant.
For more information on these fundraisers or about Dinuba’s Relay For Life, visit our website at www.relayforlife. org/dinubaca, or contact Luisa Sanchez at 859-6803.
Another event coming up is the Survivor/Caregiver Reception which will be held on Thursday, April 4th, 5:30 pm at Rabobank. It is a wonderful evening honoring survivors and caregivers. Rabobank has graciously hosted this event for the last several years.
The American Cancer Society is leading the fight for a world without cancer. Relay For Life is a community event, led by volunteers and supported by American Cancer Society staff.
Donations raised at these fundraisers go to support the Society’s various programs which provide information, education, advocacy, research and support cancer survivor services. For more information regarding cancer information, news and programs and services go to www.cancer.org or call 1-800- 227-2345 (24-hr).
Special to the Sentinel
The Dinuba Woman’s Club and local “VIP Waiters” from the community teamed up to raise $3,455 to fight cancer. This is the 11th year that the Dinuba Woman’s Club dedicated their March meeting to support Relay For Life. Donations raised over the last 11 years by the “VIP Waiters” totaled $19,600! These donations support the work of the American Cancer Society in its fight for a world without cancer.
Local “waiters” donate their time, talent and enthusiasm to raise funds for Relay and bragging rights as the waiter who brought in the most donations.
It’s always a lively meeting full of fun and “competitions” between the waiters. Each waiter held an opportunity drawing for prizes, some donned costumes and Police Chief Devon Popovich offered up “shaving off my moustache” to the table with the highest bid. As the meeting came to a close, donations initially tallied $1,525. As Karen Fier, co-lead for Relay For Life was thanking the waiters, members and guests for their generosity - more dollars were donated bringing the total to $1,930 – one of the highest amounts collected over the years. When all was said and done, Art Pena won bragging rights as the top waiter bringing in $510.
The last surprise of the afternoon was when Dr. Thusu presented a check for $1525 matching the initial tally bringing
