The Dinuba Sentinel Community Thursday, June 20, 2019 | A7 Scenes from 'Summer Night Lights'
A newly refurbished city seal and fountain at the Dinuba Downtown Entertainment Plaza makes for a refreshing escape from the Valley heat, at least for the little ones. After having not been used for a while, the city of Dinuba recently refinished the fountain with a new slip-free coating and made all necessary repairs to the fountain.
Government Affairs Committee hears updates from local reps
Local band, and local favorite, 'Balazzo' was the first band to take the stage at the city of Dinuba's Summer Night Lights last Friday. Other bands on the docket for this summer's lineup are The Fabulous Enchantments (June 28), Fortino Reyna Y Su Grupo (July 19) and That Little Band (August 2).

carbon emissions.
“What many people
don’t know is that the meat industry uses a lot of green house gases in the processing of meats, and raising of the animals,” shared Stout about her platform. “Consuming less meat can reduce carbon emissions that are released into the atmosphere.”
As for her competition next week, Stout said, “I’m very excited to be going to Vegas and meeting the other contestants. I think it’s such a great opportunity if you have the chance. It has allowed me to blossom into so much more of an open person than I once was. It really does turn you into a confident person.”
Stout is currently studying animal science at Reedley College and plans to transfer to Fresno State to study Food Safety Science.

Sentinel staff report
Three representatives from the local offices of state and federal representatives were present at last Wednesday’s Government Affairs Committee and provided updates as to what our legislators are up to. Present from the office of U.S. Representative Devin Nunes was Terry Hendrix, who updated the GAC on a bill the congressman is currently working on that would reallocate funds from the California High Speed Rail Project.
The bill, HR 1600, or the Railway Act, was introduced in March and Nunes is one of six co-sponsors to the bill.
From the office of newly elected California State Senator Melissa Hurtado, representative Jacob Villagomez told the committee that the senator’s bill SB 559 has received bipartisan approval and aims at restoring the capacity of the Friant-Kern Canal.
The bill would require that the Department of Water Resources provide a grant in the amount of $400 million to a specified joint powers authority to restore the capacity of the canal. Co-authors include State Senators Andreas Borgeas and Assembly members Joaquin Arambula, Devon Mathis and Rudy Salas.
Tim Carothers, from the office of Assembly member Devon Mathis’ office, told the committee that Mathis is proud to have introduced AB 515, a bill that aims to fix a portion of Medical that relates to interest rates on unrecovered payments. The bill would authorize the State Department of Health Services to reduce the interest rate as part of a repayment agreement entered into with the provider.
He also mentioned that Mathis is attempting to increase funding through Prop 98, which provides funding for K-12 education in the state of California.
Dinuba City Mayor Kuldip Thusu was also on hand at Wednesday’s GAC meeting, stating that nearly $2 million has been shaved from the upcoming city budget. He reiterated the city’s concern over the Internet Tax Bill (SCA 20, now AB 13).
“The city stands to lose between $5 and $6 million per year,” said Thusu. “It would decimate us, finish us.”
Thusu urged the representatives present to fight on the city’s behalf.
“We rely on you guys and the ones you represent,” Thusu added. “This is going to be make
or break for Dinuba.”
