Sentinel staff report
A new law came into effect at the beginning of this year that requires smaller businesses to comply with harassment training and the Dinuba Chamber of Commerce will be offering a sexual harassment training seminar on July 9 to help businesses comply with the new mandate.
As part of the 2018 Legislative Session, Governor Jerry Brown singed into law Senate Bill 1343, which expands existing harassment training to lower the private sector employer threshold to five or more employees. The new law mandates one hour of harassment training for non-supervisory employees of qualified employers, which includes all public agencies.
The new law requires most existing non-supervisory employees to undergo harassment training by Jan. 1, 2020.
To assist local employers comply with the new law, the Dinuba Chamber of Commerce is working with consultant Noel Zuniga of Labor Compliance Solutions to offer the sexual harassment training for employees and managers in our area at reduced cost to the employer.
Said Dinuba Chamber President Sandy Sills of the event, “It is our desire to help our local businesses meet the mandatory deadline and avoid possible fines.”
Zuniga is a Dinuba High School graduate and was formerly the Deputy Labor Commissioner for the Department of Industrial Relations, State of California, Division of Labor Standards Enforcement. Now a private consultant, Zuniga brings years of experience and knowledge to Labor Compliance Solutions. His goal is to educate and help local businesses operate within the law to avoid costly mistakes.
The Sexual Harassment Training will be held at the Dinuba Vocational Educational Center, located at 199 North L Street. Employee training will be held from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and manager training will be held from9:30a.m.to11:30a.m.
The cost for the training is $35 per person. A continental breakfast will be provided.
The event is being co-sponsored by the Dinuba Unified School District Adult Education.

Members of the American Legion Alta Post 19 performed an official flag burning ceremony on Friday at the Dinuba Veterans Memorial Building. Friday was Flag Day, the customary day to perform the ceremony. Saturday morning the members of Alta Post 19 were out at the same garden as they helped prepare it for a new landscape project, intended to dress up the Western Regional Vietnam Memorial Wall.

Friday was Flag Day in the United States and many flags were proudly displayed throughout Dinuba and the nation to honor our country’s flag. As proudly as such flags have flown, even the strongest flag is subject to the effects of the elements and can, in time, deteriorate.
But even those tired and weathered flags can be honored, as they have been for the past few years by the American Legion Alta Post 19.
“Some people don’t know, but there is a proper way to
dispose of US flags,” said Alta Post Adjutant Joe Rivera. “We do it in compliance with federal regulations.”
Flag Day is also the prescribed day for official flag burning ceremonies and this year, according to the Alta Post, approximately 50 weathered and tired flags were taken to the ceremony by community members.
The ceremony took place in the east garden of the Dinuba Veterans Memorial Building. But missing from this year’s ceremony was the Western Regional Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.
The wall was recently
disassembled to allow for a landscaping project in the garden. The project intends to allow for the wall to be properly shown while simultaneously adding greenery to the memorial.
The landscape remodel is under the direction of the Western Regional Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall Committee, with the assistance of other local veteran groups.
One of the features included in the landscaping remodel is a tropic background behind the wall, filled with planted palms trees and other plants native to Vietnam. A new curved foundation will also be poured
for the wall.
Saturday, Alta Post 19
members were out early removing the old cement foundation and prepping the area to be landscaped.
The Alta Post of the American Legion will also be having a Spaghetti Dinner tomorrow night at the Dinuba Veterans Memorial Building. The dinner will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost for the dinner is $10 and will include spaghetti, green beans, garlic bread, salad, dessert and beverages.
For more information on tomorrow night’s dinner, contact Vice Commander Clement Zuniga at 393-1051.
