HOSA students attend state conference

workshops were focused on CPR, Career Display Boards, Medical Spelling, EMT, and Health Photography, just to name a few.
The officers, members, and advisors who attended had a fun experience. Not only was it a day full of knowledge for the students, but it was also a good motivation for the students to get involved with different competitions.
The local HOSA competition was on Dec. 5, so HOSA students in the Med Pathway, eagerly prepared to compete in them in order to move on to the State level in April.
In November, HOSA students, as well as students in the Medical Academy, had the idea to decorate the football stadium green to show awareness for NAMI. NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illnesses. Students wore green to the football game to show their support for NAMI.
Many HOSA students in the Med academy participated in HOSA week. Each day students wore something different, for example, wearing scrubs, college apparel, HOSA shirts, and wearing green.

the family's business tradition. His parents own a Shell gas station in Sanger to this day and Mohammed was looking to get into the same line of work. Coincidentally enough, that journey took him directly in the path of his old high school counselor and mentor.
Two years ago, Vaca ran into his old student again when Mohammed brought his younger cousin into Orosi High School to get him registered. The two would then stay in contact via social media and run into each other from time to time.
Then earlier last month, Dec. 11 to be exact, Vaca was sitting in his office and was notified
by the receptionist that a Jack Mohammed was there to see him.
“Send him in,” Vaca told the receptionist.
The two sat down and talked life. Mohammed shared with his old counselor that he was now married with two kids.
Said Vaca, “We were just catching up on life and before he left he said, ‘Oh, I want to make a donation for scholarships,’ and I was like, that's fantastic! So I ask him, how much were you thinking?”
Mohammed responded, “I can do $10,000 this year.”
Vaca admitted he was a bit taken aback. He then notified the
school’s scholarship coordinator, Emilia Villagomez, and told her, “I’ve got some good news.”
He then asked Mohammed how soon he could cut the check. Mohammed’s response, “I can cut it right now.”
Mohammed and his family own two gas stations in the Cutler-Orosi area, Jack’s Gas & Deli and Cutler Food Mart. The family will celebrate their 20th anniversary in the area next year and, though they have always made small donations to local schools and sports programs in the past, this is the first time they

The money will be made available this year via scholarships. Students at Orosi High School can apply for it and a scholarship committee will decide which ten students receive
the scholarships.
“This is a win-win for
everyone,” said Vaca. “He gets a tax write-off and our students get scholarships. Everybody wins.”
