team to a PacWest Champion- ship,” Velarde said. “The main thing is being cool, calm and collected and staying relaxed and focus on one game at a time. Every game is a step to the goal that we have.”
Velarde knows that with preseason honors comes pres- sure of living up to the hype.
“That is a huge thing that I am learning and am still
learning about. Now that I am more mature and experi- enced I feel like there is play- ers around me that can benefit from that,” Velarde said. “I'll drag players in and they will be able to produce.”
Velarde said that he will head into his final swith some- thing to prove.
The Sunbirds open the season on Sept. 4, against Cal Poly Pomona at 7 p.m. at Ramirez Field at Fresno Pa- cific University.

“One of the main goals I
have is to perform and show that I am a player that is to be heard form around every- where. That is how the game is. I want to win every award that there is possible and I want to do it as a team.”

The Pirates not only have a goal of winning a seventh straight NYL title, but also believe they can compete for a Division III Championship.
Coach Marquez is confi- dent the team will keep fo- cused on this season and not look to rely on past success.
“They have come back with the idea that it doesn't stop here. They have a goal of trying to finish the season off on a high note,” Marquez said. “We want to go after
