Fit to be tied
Jacob Marroquin’s single in the sixth inning broke up a no-hit bid by Firebaugh’s Joey Ochoa as the Dinuba High baseball team tied the Eagles, 2-2, Monday afternoon in the Fowler Easter Classic.
“It was a well-played game with some good pitching. Jacob came in and gave us a spark,” said Emperors coach Brent Morrelli.
Dinuba starter Justin Gonzalez was dealing as well as the junior went six innings allowing six hits with four strikeouts before being relieved by Josh Escobedo.
Firebaugh scored in the first inning as Jeshua Gutierrez hit a double and scored on an extra base hit by Ochoa. The Eagles added another run in the third inning on a two-out RBI single from Joey Fuentes. Firebaugh would load the bases as Gonzalez got out of the jam striking out Ochoa.

Dinuba High’s Sid Chavarin, who drove in a run against Fowler, scored the game-tying run against Firebaugh on Monday afternoon as the Emperors closed out the Fowler Easter Classic with a 1-0-2 record.

Dinuba High basketball players Luke Rodriguez, Sebastian Garza and John Calderon got to play as a unit one more time as members of the Tulare County All-Star team under the direction of Jeff Schofield in the Tulare/Kings all-star basketball game at College of the Sequoias’ Porter Field House on Saturday.
Schofield said it was his first time coaching an all-star game.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Schofield said. “I’ve been asked a few times before.”
Opposing Schofield was Joe’l Sligh, head coach at Lemoore High.
By game’s end, Schofield and company won a high-scoring affair, 100-90.
“There wasn’t a whole lot of defense,” Schofield said. “We had four practices and mostly ran up and down the court to get their legs back. Everyone had fun.”

Upon returning from Spring Break, athletes on the Orosi High track and field team will have to gear up for a big meet as the Cardinals will host the West Sequoia League championships at 3:30 p.m. on April 24.

Orosi took part in the 24 team Sierra Pacific Golden Bear Invitational on April 12. The highest individual placer was Fernando Vargas who was second in the high jump at 5-feet-6 inches.
Ezequiel Zapien, Claudio Vasquez, Andrew Arechiga and Aaron De la Cruz placed fourth overall with a time of 46.53. Vasquez also went on to place fifth in the 100 in 11.68 and was sixth in the 200 in 23.85. De la Cruz placed sixth in the long jump with a mark of
Hurdler Chris Huerta was fourth in the 110 (17.29) and fifth in the 300 (44.94). Chris Martinez finished sixth in the 800 in a time of 2:13.52 and was eighth in the 400 in 56.81.
Melanie Davila had a pair of top- five finishes as she was 3rd in the 300
in a time of 2:38.44. Alejandra Lopez also was in the 800 and she placed sixth in 2:40.79.

With months of training and meets, the Dinuba High swim teams are primed for the Central Sequoia League Championships.
The Emperors won’t have to travel far with this year’s championships being held on April 24 beginning at noon at the Dinuba High School Aquatics Complex.
On April 10 in a dual meet at Exeter, Dinuba’s Alex Lacy won the
100 butterfly in 1 minute, 14 seconds. Jazmine Hernandez was third in a time of 1:34.87 and Leanne Nunez was fifth in 1:40.09.
The 200 medley relay team of Vanessa Hernandez, Mikenna Curtis, Lacy and Angelina Arreola, were second in a time of 2:15.62. The team of Viviana Contreras, Danielle Shin, Nunez and J. Hernandez finished fourth with a time of 2:42.54.

reached on an error and Isaiah Ochoa’s single scored Marroquin to cut the lead to 2-1. With one-out, Corey Cosper’s grounder scored Chavarin from third base to tie the game.
Dinuba finished the tournament with a 1-0-2 record and have three more games before the season wraps up. Morrelli said he is without the services of starting catcher Noah Cortez, who had shoulder surgery.
“We’re down to our third string catcher,” Morelli said. “We brought up Evan Garza and he played well for us.”
Earlier on Monday, Dinuba got behind 1-0 to Washington Union before taking a 3-1 lead in the third and cruised to a 12-1 win.
Escobedo and Michael Gomez each drove in a pair of runs while Ochoa and Meave had three hits apiece.

Dinuba High senior Jonathan Padilla ran a personal best of 4 minutes, 35.59 seconds in the 1,600 and later posted a season’s best 10:30.37 in the 3,200 as the Emperors had a solid day at the Maxey Parks Invitational on April 12 at John Ventura Stadium in Easton.
Padilla’s winning time in the 1600 was five seconds faster than runner-up James Barrett of Bullard. Teammates Diego Estrada and Danny Aurajo finished fifth and sixth with times of 4:48.31 and 4:50.43. Estrada had also set a personal record in capturing the 800 in 2:04.06 while Aurajo was in 2nd with a PR of 2:05.96.
In the 3200, Padilla finished second overall behind Kerman’s Anthony Castro, who won the race in 10:25.32. Dinuba’s Jaime Soto was seventh in 11:36.77 and Jose Arreguin was eighth in 11:55.61.
Estevan Diaz turned in a great performance winning the shot put and discus events with PR’s. Diaz won the shot with a throw of 47-feet-9 inches, two feet more than his previous best and in the discus, he improved by nearly three feet with a mark of 139-6.
Evyn Ruelas took 2nd in the triple jump (36-2) and long jump (18-1).
