Staff Report
The upcoming Wreaths for Reedley Veterans Cer- emony is closer to having stainless steel hangers to go with wreaths adorning the graves to about 1,800 veter- ans at Reedley Cemetery.
This year’s fifth annual wreaths ceremony is sched- uled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Memorial Service building at the cem- etery. Organizer Susan Lusk said volunteers are need to transport wreaths and lay out wreaths before the cer- emony as well as pick up and
bag wreaths in January. Lusk said the Valley Iron, Inc. of Fresno has donated the metal needed to create the remaining stainless steel hangers needed to go with the wreaths, Organizations and companies assisting in the project are Fowler High School FFA, Immanuel Fab Shop, the Knights of Colum- bus and O’Neill Vintners and
Distillers of Parlier.
The tentative schedule
is to transport the wreaths from the storage at the Reed- ley Armory to the cemetery at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 15. They will be laid out prior to the 10
a.m. ceremony. Wreaths will be picked up from the cem- etery on Saturday, Jan. 5, and returned to the Armory. Wreaths will be bagged for storage the following Satur- day, Jan. 12.
Lusk said donations from
volunteers are welcome to assist in ongoing costs of re- placing wreaths, ribbons and hangers as well as providing the metal. Donations can be made to the Reedley Area Veterans nonprofit (write “Wreaths for Reedley Vet- erans” on memo line if mak- ing out a check). Donation information also is available by contacting Andy Ochoa at (559) 250-3559.
Anyone wishing more in- formation or looking to vol- unteer can contact Lusk at (559) 859-2865. At least 10 to 12 trucks are needed to pick up and transport the wreaths.

“I saw first-hand what war did to them,” he said.
Willhoite shared of his ex- perience with veterans deal- ing with depression and other issues.
“In AMVETS, we deal with suicide prevention and all that way too much,” he said. “We have people at a function at our hall, and I’ve have men have flashbacks and start crying. And all we can do, because we’re really not knowledgeable about it, is hold them. And let them know that we’re here for them.”
Willhoite encouraged students to go up and shake hands or even hug a veteran. He said veterans appreciate the gesture from young peo- ple.
“Remember, this is a great country,” he said. “It’s having a little turmoil right now, but all of us — no matter what color, creed or religion you are — we’re Americans. So come with us and fight together to stop this prejudice in this country.”
