Teruko IkuTa February 10, 1922 ~ October 24, 2018
CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Teruko Ikuta, 96, died October 24, 2018. She was a Nisei born in Liberty, San Joaquin, California to the late Torakichi and Ume (Negishi) Ikuta who emigrated from Japan in 1899 and 1906, respectively, the latter just days before the great San Francisco earthquake. She was the penultimate daughter of eight children, Shizuko “Pearl” (Toshio Yamashita), Fumiko “Ruby,” Shinichiro “George” (Shigeko “Louise” Sakamoto), Seijiro “Frank” (Yoshiko Kajita), Saburo “Jack” (Aiko Sasaki), Alice (Fredrick Scholz), all by whom she was predeceased, and her sister Mutsuko Ikuta. She was also predeceased by nephew and niece Ruichi (Alice Kawamura) and Tamiko Yamashita. Like many Nisei, she lived between the traditional, community- oriented Japanese values of her immigrant parents and the more individualistic values of 20th century America.
The course of her life was forever altered by World War II. At age 20, she and her family were forcibly evacuated from their home in Reedley, CA and sent to a concentration camp in Poston, AZ while her brothers “Frank” and “Jack” served in the US Army. On July 4, 1943, along with her parents, “George,” Alice, and Mutsuko, she resettled in Cleveland, where she worked as a domestic servant in Shaker Heights. After the war, “Pearl” and “Jack” returned to Reedley, while “Frank” joined the Cleveland branch of the family.
A consummate cook and autodidact food scientist, she avoided the limelight and lived humbly in the service of others. Unlike some of the Sansei who found their voice in ethnic studies or taiko drums, this quiet service of family and community may have been the only expression of Japanese values available to her in the wake of the oppressive camp and relocation experiences. She spent most of her life in food service, primarily at the family restaurant, George’s, at St. Clair and E. 21st St.
Like her sister and many other Nisei of her era who remained in the Midwestern diaspora, she never married or had children. She traveled with her sister to Hawai`i, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Maine, Washington, DC, Boston, New York, and San Francisco, and made many visits to see her family in California.
In California, she is survived by nieces Satoko (Harry Kim) and Keiko Yamashita (Mac Nishimoto), nephews George (Aileen Nakamura), Dennis (Denice Dugan), and Frank (Susie Perez); great-nieces and nephews Laurie (Matt Monarres), Danielle (Wilbur Hightower), Deric (Brooke Bennett), Denae (George Rodriguez), and Jaclyn, Joseph, and Luke Ikuta. She is also survived by great-grand nephews and nieces Monte, Kenny, Jerry, and Victoria Kim; Janice (Henry Kuwahara), Paul, and Karen Yamashita; Shannon Kim; Nicki Rodriguez; Vance, Amber, and Angela Kim; Connor, Rory, and Emilia Rodriguez; Alexandra, Gideon, and Hana Hightower; Evelyn Ikuta; and Xavier and Norah Monarres; and great-great-grandnieces and nephews Christopher Yamashita; Gabriel Rodriguez; Ethan and Kai Kim; Chris and Alani Tellez; and great-great-great-grandnephew Thomas Tellez. In the Midwest and East, she is survived by grand-nephew Duane (Mie Komatsu) and great-grandniece Ava Kazumi Yamashita; Mutsuko, from whom she was nearly inseparable, and niece, nephew, and grand-nephew and niece C. Nozomi Ikuta (James Watson), Peter (Alexandra Sakatos), and Hannah Yoshiko Watson, for whom she cooked and cared many years.
In the last eight months of her life, with the caring support of the Eliza Jennings’ day program, she discovered and asserted her autonomy before passing peacefully with her dear sister, Mutsuko, at her bedside.

“Not only because I under- stand where they’ve been, but also to show them that even af- ter coming back and going to war that there is hope for you to still have success,” she said.
Reedley College students and faculty were involved with the patriotic theme of the ceremony. The college’s Concert Choir performed the national anthem as well as a
rendition of “God Bless Amer- ica.” Phillip Max Hernandez, a veteran who is serving as president this year of the col- lege’s Active Minds Club, was master of ceremonies for the event and led in a moment of silence. instructor John Heathcote played “Taps” on the trumpet .
The Reedley High School Navy Junior ROTC unit pre- sented the colors at the start of the ceremony. Christopher Bodine, program command- er, said the school has been involved with the annual vet- erans events at the college since 2000.
Staff Report
Residents using a garden hose were able to extinguish a brief fire that broke out in a home on the 140-0 block of North Hemlock Avenue on Nov. 8.
Reedley Fire Department personnel, along with Cal Fire and Fresno County Fire crews, arrived at about 8:45 p.m. at the residence after receiving a report of fire and smoke coming from behind the stove area. First responders report no visible smoke or fire, but learned from the occupants at the home that the resi- dents had taken the hose and successfully put out the fire.
The company officer on the first arriving engine determined that because considerable heat coming from the celing area where the stove and exhaust fan were, there was a need to pull some ceiling down and expose the inside
of the attic in the kitchen. After pulling down a portion of the ceiling, crews started noticing a light haze of smoke coming from the attic space, and the order was given to pull more ceiling down.
Fire officials said the cause of the brief blaze was unknown, but it appeared that fire was smoldering and had burned for a couple of days. FLames had completely burned through a 2x4 board in the kitchen ceiling area and was on the verge of igniting insulation and spread- ing.
Department officials credited the quick ac- tion of residents who took a hose to the flames. Had there been a sudden introduction oxygen a free-burning fire would have broken out in the attic area and spread quickly.
Smoldering fires can burn eery slowly and extremely hot over the course of hours and even days.
