McMaryion, Bulldogs win MWC crown
Victory over nemesis Boise State earns Fresno State a bowl game against Arizona State
Sentinel Staff Report
Fresno State football finally put an end to a 10 game losing streak on Boise State’s blue turf.
The Bulldogs (11-2) won the overtime thriller when former Dinuba High standout quarterback, Marcus McMaryion, pitched the ball to running back Ronnie Rivers, who avoided a Broncos tackler, on his way to the endzone giving No. 24 Fresno State a 19-16 overtime victory over No. 19 Boise State.
The game-winning TD run by Rivers gave the Bulldogs their first conference title in five years. It also set off a wild celebration from players, coaches and fans in attendance who survived a wild game and terrible weather conditions.
Fresno State scored first when Boise State quarterback Brett Rypien fumbled and moments later McMaryion connected on a 15-yard pass play to Michiah Quick.
Boise State answered on a 10-yard scoring TD when Rypien found Sean Modster in the back of the end zone. Rypien’s pass went through the hands of Fresno State defender Jacob Bryant and into Modsters arms, who had one foot inbounds in the back of the endzone.
The Bulldogs, in a driving snow flurry, received a pair of field goals from Asa Fuller in the second and third quarter for a 13-7 lead.
Boise State added a touchdown when running back Alexander Mattison scored on a 34-yard run. The ensuing PAT was blocked by Matt Boetang, leaving it tied.
In OT, the Bulldogs defense held forcing the Broncos into a field goal. On the next possession, Fresno State moved the ball with a big pass play from McMaryion to tight end Jarod Rice, setting up Rivers’ TD a few plays later.
The Bulldogs head to the Las Vegas Bowl on Dec. 15 with a three game winning streak and are set to play Arizona State, who finished the season with a 7-5 record and 5-4 in the Pac-12 standings.
Arizona State will be without its wide receiver, N’Keal Harry, who is foregoing his senior season after declaring for the 2019 NFL Draft.
