March 22-25 in Sacramento.
Imagine a group of teenagers who spent
all their spare time poring over study packets on Africa. Imagine the same group of kids answering questions about Africa in front
of hundreds of audience members. Imagine them calling the experience “fun.”
That’s what the members of the Sanger High School Academic Decathlon team said on Saturday after the Super Quiz portion of the 2018 Fresno County Academic Decathlon competition.
Super Quiz consists of three rounds of multiple choice questions in which students have just a few seconds to answer before the results are displayed to the audience and the correct answer is read aloud.
But the overall score isn’t determined just by Super Quiz results. The morning of Super Quiz, the Academic Decathlon teams underwent private testing in math, science and history. A week before, the students did speeches and were interviewed.
By Saturday night, the results were in and medals and trophies were awarded.
The Academic Decathlon is designed to include students from all achievement levels. Teams generally consist of nine members, who are divided into divisions based on grade point average: Honors, Scholastic and Varsity. Each team member competes in all 10 events against other students in his or her division, and team scores are calculated using the top
two overall individual scores from each team in all three divisions.
Individual medals were won by:
• Rogelio Moreno - 9th overall top varsity student $100 scholarship
• Von Balanon- Top Team II Student $100
• Essay: Deylon Klose (Bronze), Gabriella Ceja (Silver) and Citlali Hernandez (Gold)
• Literature: Grace Garcia (Bronze), Citlali Hernandez (Bronze), Von Balanon (Silver) and Rogelio Moreno (Gold)
• Interview: Jesus Castro (Bronze), Ryan Alvarado (Bronze), Deylon Klose (Silver), Dominick Vega (Gold-Perfect Score), Rogelio Moreno (Gold-Perfect Score)

SANGER HERALD 7A THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2018 Honored by the city council
Frank Valles served on the planning commission from September of 2013 until recently. During that time several challeng- ing projects were tackled by the commission including revisions to the zoning rrdinance related to mobile home standards, design standards for single family residence, the city’s housing element and marijuana regula- tions.
Sgt. Steven Gaucin graduated from the Fresno City College Police Academy in May of 1985. He began his police career in Sanger in May of 1986 when he was appointed as a reserve police officer. In August of 1987 became a full-time police officer. Since then he has served as a field training officer, as an investi- gator for the Tri-City Narcotic Task Force and as a felony crime investigator.
In June of 1997, he was promoted to corporal and became a member of the supervisory team. In April of 2001 he was promoted to sergeant and has been super- vising police officers on patrol teams. In mid-2015, he was named department training manager.
Sgt. Gaucin has been awarded the Basic, Interme- diate, and Advanced Certificates from the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). He is retiring, after serving Sanger for more than 31 years.
Other projects Frank was involved with included the expansion of Pitman Farms, approval of the new city water tank, the Memorial Village project and the 2035 gen- eral plan update. While on the commission Frank was also engaged in the proposed 80 acre subdivision that included a general plan amendment, zoning zmendment, conditional use permit, and annexation application.
