Ruiz 4 Kids Mini-Grants for Teachers open to 2018-19 applicants
read. I think at state, especially, there’s over 1,000 students that compete in all of the different categories. A lot of them are really well done, but overdone.
“And it looks like a student did it. It’s well done, but it doesn’t look like mom and dad spent 40 hours doing it for her, which is nice. I definitely make the kids do it, and that’s the whole point. I’m just really proud of her.”
Emma’s award winning poster was on the topic of protecting childhood child labor laws. Her board included her thesis, written supporting information, documents, photographs and quotes.
“It was about how children had to work in factories in mills because the factory owners didn’t want adults to work in the factories and mills anymore,” Emma said. “Children could fit into smaller places and they could pay them for less. Parents needed their children to work because of the money they would bring in. Many parents and families at that time didn’t have enough money to provide for their families.
“I didn’t think it was really OK for the factory owners to do that to children because they were still really young and they didn’t deserve to be working at such a young age, when they should be going to school and learning so they can get a job when they’re older.”
Thornburg is in her second year conducting the History Day project for Dinuba students. Last year the Dinuba group had a runner-up winner at state.

Ruiz 4 Kids has opened the application process for the Mini-Grants for Teacher for the 2018-2019 school year. The deadline to submit an application online is Friday, July 13, 2018.
“Investing in the education of our children, is investing in our future,” said Blanca Santana, Ruiz 4 Kids Ambassador Dinuba. “We understand that the needs of the teachers to provide a quality education should not weigh on just the budgets of the school districts, but come from all available resources. This is why we created the mini-grant program. Our goal is to help teachers grow the creative side of education and show their students there is more to learning than sitting in a classroom.”
The grant is open to teachers in grades K-12 serving public schools within a 35-mile radius of Dinuba, CA. Grant awards range from $300 - $1,000. To align with the objectives of the Ruiz 4 Kids organization, teachers interested in submitting a grant are reminded to ensure their
intended projects are creative and will enhance their students learning experience. Grant recipients are also expected to report on the expenditure of grant funds and results of the supported project at the end of the funded school year.
The Mini-Grants for Teachers Program is funded solely by Ruiz Foods employee donations. Ruiz 4 Kids does not use any of the donated money for administrative or other costs. In other words, all funds donated to this program by Ruiz employees go directly to the Mini-Grants Program. In 2017 Ruiz 4 Kids awarded $47,923 to teachers in California, Texas and South Carolina.

Roosevelt fourth grader Emma Rico holds her state- champion-winning poster project for the state History Day competition.
Of Emma, she explained, “Fourth grade is the first year they can participate so this was obviously the first year she’s done it. She didn’t know what a thesis was, she didn’t know what a bibliography was, and she can speak to what all of those things are now, which is really
impressive.”
Already Thornburg’s students
are approaching her to start on next year’s History Day projects, fresh off of the six months they spent on their current projects. Emma says she will be back to defend her champion award as a fifth grader.
