Sixth generation cattleman Jack Lavers hopes to rein in Sacramento in 2018 by vying for the California State Assembly District 26 seat.
Lavers, 34, lives in Glenville with his wife, Jennifer, and seven-year-old daughter, Reagan - named after Ronald Reagan. He owns and operates the ranch where his family has been located since 1858.
The republican’s passionate stances include reducing taxes and fees, advocating for agriculture, small businesses and gun rights, and fighting for legal immigrants.
The cattleman has his fair share of political experience through his work background. He has represented the California Cattlemen’s Association in both Sacramento and Washington D.C. on topics including agriculture and food policy, public land

issues and water rights. Lavers was recently named the 2018 Kern County Cattleman of the Year.
As to why he decided to run, Lavers said, “I looked at what was available to vote for and what was happening to me from the state level on my business and agriculture as a whole, to our small schools, to our big schools, to our legal immigrants, and said, ‘Enough is enough.’ We need somebody up there that is willing to stand up and fight.
“Nobody is speaking for me, nobody is speaking for small business anymore in the state of California, nobody is speaking out for agriculture anymore ... for legal immigrants that have busted their butts to get here and provide for their families. That is something that is alarming to me and needs to change. We need to have a dramatic shift of the pendulum here in California. If we don’t fix it soon, we’re going to be broke.”
Lavers is one of three Republicans so far
running for the seat, including incumbent Devon Mathis and Visalia Mayor Warren Gubler. Lavers believes his message will resonate most with the residents of the district, where Dinuba is located.
“I know that the vast majority of the people in the 26th Assembly District think the way I do,” Lavers said. “Everywhere I’ve been, everyone I talk to says the same thing, that we don’t need any more watered-down liberal republicans. We need a strong constitutional conservative, and that’s what I am.
“I’m going to stand for no new taxes and no new fees, which is a tax. I’m going to stand for water for our farmers in the Valley, period, and for regulations to get off our backs on water issues and public land issues for all those people in the mountain communities.”
The California primaries will be held on June 5 while 2018 elections will be held on Nov. 6.
