Plenty of key players return for DHS
By George M. Villagrana

Reflecting on last week’s season-ending loss to Hoover, Dinuba High girls basketball coach Benny Prado stated the style of game was exactly what he wanted.
“We played the game we wanted to play,” Prado said. “We limited their best player’s shots and touches.”
The Emperors had led 39-34 before going cold as the Patriots went on to seize control of the game for a 53-42 win.
“In the last four minutes we didn’t execute and took shots that are not in our offense,” Prado said. “The missed shots allowed them to get into transition and we ultimately couldn’t recover.”
Freshman guard Kaily Lopez led the team with 13 points and Yazmine Villareal-Harris along with Ashley Flores each reached double figures with 10.
“We are a very young team,” he said. “We are losing one player and we are gaining two players from injuries next year.”
Prado went on to point out

Freshman Kailey Lopez had an oustanding season leading the team in scoring. She will be one of nine players returning next season.

that he will have nine returners from a team that finished the year 16-13.
“We return our top five scorers, led by Lopez, Flores and
Villareal-Harris,” Prado said. Prado stated that first year varsity players Kaylee Villasenor and Azlynn Villalobos had very good years and will only look to
get better.
“We are really excited
about the future of DHS girls basketball and the team we have coming back next year.”
The Orosi High boys soccer team, who opened the Central Section Division IV playoffs with a win at home against Yosemite, picked up another win on the road at Woodlake, 2-1. The Cardinals played top-seeded Foothill late Tuesday. Results of the match were unavailable at press time.

Dinuba High’s playoff appearance may have been short- lived, yet head coach Claudia Diaz remained upbeat after the Emperors dropped a 3-0 Central Section Division IV playoff match to Fowler last Thursday.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Diaz said. “We haven’t been to the playoffs in a few years and we made it.”
Diaz said Fowler scored very quick as the Emperors appeared to be nervous.
“We don’t have the playoff experience,” she said. “This is the
first time for some of the seniors and we started out nervous.”
The Redcats added a goal late in the second half and Diaz went all-in to score a goal to close the gap but Fowler sealed it with another score.
“I left the back side open and they scored. It was my mistake.” Diaz said.
Dinuba finished the year with a 9-11-1 record, a great improvement from a year ago when the Emperors won two matches.
“Now that we have the playoff experience, we have to work harder in the summer and get better,” Diaz said.

and take away their 3-point shooting,” he said. “Number 20 specifically [Magaña]. The kid is just a great player and he made plays consistently through the game and made the big shots when they needed them.”
The Emperors took their first lead of the game on a Rodriguez basket, 38-36. The Rams’ made 1 of 2 free throws and on their next possession Ipreye Egbe drove the lane and converted a 3-point basket that gave them the lead, 40-38. Guard Sebastian Garza answered with a layup off the glass over Isaiah Hughes to tie the game one last time. Teammate Isaak Flores made 1 of 2 free throws before Magaña drained another deep 3 in front of Nicholas Cinquemani
to make the score 44-40. Hughes made a basket to make it a one possession game. A pair of free throws by L. Rodriguez was followed by Magaña making 1 of 2 free throws after he was intentionally fouled closed the scoring.
Both teams started off slowly as Garces led 10-8 after the first and had a 23-15 lead cut to five on a 3-pointer by Rodriguez before the half.
Rodriguez finished the game with 13.
In their opener, Dinuba bolted out to a 42-14 lead and never looked back as the Emperors routed East-Bakersfield, 63-46, on Feb. 13.
Magaña led the team with 14 points.

Goal
Continued from Page B1
The Miners pushed their lead to 3-1 and appeared to be in cruise control, but the Emperors showed some grit and determination very late in the match. Jose Renteria’s goal with less than five minutes remaining pulled Dinuba within goal. Moments later, Duran got loose dribbling the ball toward the Miners goalie and was tackled in the box by El Diamante’s Jesus Lua Garcia, drawing a penalty kick.
Duran then delivered the equalizer. El Diamante’s last chance gasp took place on a throw in. A Miners player headed the ball which hit the top of the post and somehow was deflected back to an El Diamante player who made the final goal with
seconds to spare.
“We worked so hard to tie
the game and lost it like that,” Rodriguez said.
In their playoff opener at home last Wednesday, Dinuba trailed visiting Atascadero 1-0 as Cristobal Ramos tied the match with a late goal.
With all the momentum on their side the Emperors dominated the overtime period as Duran scored the eventual game-winner.
Next season, Rodriguez expects his team to be in contention again as he returns 17 players.
“We lose five seniors, two of them are starters,” Rodriguez said. “We’re a young team but we should be good again next year.”
