This weekend the California Interscholastic Wrestling State Championships will be held at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
This year marks the inaugural weekend event in which boys and girls will compete concurrently for their respective State Championship titles.
Three Dinuba High wrestlers qualified for the state championships after this past weekend’s Central Section Masters finals in Lemoore.
At 103, junior Javier Castro will open the state tourney against Blake Fredrickson of Windsor. The winner will then take on Xavier Jimenez of Redwood. Castro is coming off an eighth place finish at the Masters meet.
At 120, senior Lorenzo Arreola will face Carson Sauriol of Poway with the winner moving on to face Harrison Nguyen of Evergreen Valley. Arreola punched his ticket to the finale placing sixth in Lemoore.
Daniel Long, who placed sixth at the section masters, is No. 5. He will await the winner of Chrsitian Landin of Frontier/Gabriel Martinez of Oakdale. Long, who won an individual crown at Division 1 championships at Clovis North two weeks ago, finished sixth this past weekend.
Autumn Rangel narrowly missed making a trip to the state finals as she placed sixth falling in her last match, 4-2, at 126.

2-0 loss to visiting Washington Union Monday night in a Central Section quarterfinals matchup.
Orosi concluded its season with a record 14-3-4 while the Panthers move on to the semifinals where they face North Sequoia League rival Kerman. The Lions shutout Bishop, 3-0, in their match on Friday.
“Things just didn’t go our way,” said coach Sarah Vega.
The most surprising aspect was the Cardinals outplayed their opponent. The
Cardinals put tremendous pressure on the Panthers defense. Then late in the second half, the Caruthers High transfer and University of Georgia softball commit, Sydney Kuma, scored her second goal of the match on a header with 10 minutes in the game. Kuma’s athleticism was on display early as she took a long pass, raced down the field and scored the first goal five minutes into the match.
“We knew about her,” Vega said. “We had more chances and more shots on

Vega will now have to reload next
season as the Cardinals’ current roster has nine seniors.
“We get to focus on next year,” Vega said. “I have a big graduating class and now I have a lot of shoes to fill next year.”
Orosi will return a few players that made signficant contributions that includes sophomore Melanie Davila, junior forward Amber Apodaca and goalie Mireya Lua.

At the final whistle, members of the Orosi High girls soccer team bowed their heads and consoled each other on the field.
For several others, it took a while for the emotions to come out while sitting on the bench.
The Cardinals, who were seeking to defend their Central Section Division V crown, were on the short end of a

15 points in the fourth quarter as the Emperors rallied for a 47-42 win over the fifth-seeded Rams and advanced to the semifinals. The Emperors played No. 10 Cesar Chavez on Wednesday with the winner moving on to Saturday’s Valley Championship game at Selland Arena. Chavez knocked off top-seeded Mt. Whitney in overtime, 75-69.
“Our defense played very well,” said coach Jeff Schofield as the Emperors held the Rams to their lowest point since their loss to Crespi on Dec. 15. “I eventually told the kids, we’re going to get hot and we’re going to go on a run. They stood the course. They stayed with it.”
The defensive effort combined with a 24 point fourth quarter was too much for Garces, who ends their year at 17-14.
Magaña said he knew the team was due for a big run.
“We didn’t play well in the first half,” Magaña said. “We just kept hanging around and we knew that big run was going to come.”
Down 34-24 entering the 4th, Luke Rodriguez converted two free throws to cut the lead to single digits. That also sparked a 12-2 run as Dinuba got an inside basket from Sinuhe Vargas and consecutive 3-pointers from Magana that tied the game at 36.
Garces head coach Brian Dignan said coming into the game the Rams knew Dinuba’s strength was their 3-point shooting.

Jorge Duran’s match-tying penalty kick late in the second half gave the Dinuba High boys soccer team a chance to extend their season in overtime.
However, it was not to be as El Diamante scored with seconds remaining in regulation for a 4-3 win in a Division III quarterfinals match on a cold and rainy night Friday in Dinuba.

From the opening whistle, El Diamante came out firing away as the Miners jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Emperors got on the board on a goal from Juan Gutierrez.
“They came out with everything they had,” said coach Ramiro Rodriguez. “They got us in the beginning, but we were able to get back into it.”

It’s no secret the player doning the number 20 jersey for Dinuba High has come up big down the stretch for the Emperors.
For opposing teams, Josh Magaña has been tough to stop and visiting Garces found out first-hand during Friday evenings Division III quarterfinals playoff game.
