Wrestling in their home gym, Reedley High’s boys collected three North Yosemite League individual cham- pionships while the Pi- rates rolled to the girls team title in the league tournament on Feb. 7.
Sophomore Phillip Arroyo (132 pounds) and seniors Ethan Anderson (126) and Gabriel Badil- la (160) all pinned their opponents in the finals, helping the Pirates finish fourth in the boys team standings with 123.5 points. Sunnyside won with 221 points, having all 13 of its wrestlers finish in the top four, including four league champions.
Reedley’s girls, mean- while, received champi- onship wins on the mat from Jocelyn Barrera (131) and Esther Villa (160) along with six oth- er first place winners to score 152 points and run away with the team crown.
Arroyo closed out the afternoon finals in style, methodically building a lead and then pinning McLane’s Cedrick Lee in 4 minutes, 23 seconds. Anderson and Badilla,

A torrid shooting and scoring performance by senior Augie Villarreal, combined with critical defensive stops in piv- otal moments, carried the Reedley High Pirates over the hump in a triple over- time basketball thriller on Feb. 6.
Villarreal turned in one of the school’s great- est scoring performances, lighting the nets for 48 points (22 in the second quarter alone) including eight 3-point baskets as Reedley (15-10, 3-6) pulled out an improbable 90-84 triumph over the Fresno High Warriors at a noisy RHS gym. The triumph turned the tables on a 76- 37 drubbing at the hands of Fresno in the league opener on Jan. 14, and im- proved the team’s playoff seeding prospects this Sat- urday, Feb. 15.
“When we played at their house, we didn’t play our game,” said Villar- real, a three-year varsity starter. “We kind of came out cold then and they got us, but we just turned it around tonight. That’s got to be because of our prac- tices, we’ve really been working hard.”
Pirates coach Chris Freeman said the team adeptly fed the ball to Villarreal, and the senior turned in a stunning shoot- ing performance.
“We really tried to fo- cus on attacking Augie’s side so he gets it on the kickback,” Freeman said. “He absolutely killed it. He could go anyway he wanted and go inside and finish.”
Fresno led 18-17 after one quarter before Vil- larreal went to work. He made a layup, hit three free throws and then an- other driving basket be- fore beginning his outside shooting barrage. In a course of three minutes late in the quarter, the guard drained four treys – all from the left elbow, before closing with anoth- er layup to finish the half with 28 points.
Villarreal said he nev- er had a game where his shooting touch was this
pinpoint.
“I think my highest
game was 30 before this. Nothing like this,” he said. “I wished I had made a couple of more free throws. Outside of that, it was a good game.”
Villarreal continued his clutch play down the stretch, making a jump shot and spinning drive into the lane to give RHS a 74-72 lead with 28 seconds left in the first overtime. Fresno tied the score on a basket by Darnelle Nae- ole (team-high 32 points and 12 rebounds), and had a chance to win but Aaron Todd made a steal and drew a foul with no time remaining. He had a chance to win the game at the foul line with a 1-and-1, but his first try missed.
In the second extra session, Fresno led by a basket in the waning seconds but left the door open with two missed free throws. The Pirates capi- talized as Todd found Leo Hernandez inside for the tying basket with 1.5 sec- onds left, forcing a third OT. Naeole gave Fresno a brief lead before Todd re- sponded with a reverse la- yup. After two missed foul shots by FHS, Villarreal made his biggest basket of the night with a three from the left wing to give Reedley the lead for good.
Reedley’s defense stepped it up in the wan- ing seconds, and even though Villarreal missed two free throws that could have given him 50 points, three free throws by Todd (16 points) closed out the scoring. Marcus Heinrichs chipped in with 14 points, including a huge block in the first overtime.
“Definitely helps us go- ing to the playoffs,” Free- man said. “We’re very ex- cited going in, and a triple overtime [win] is always exciting to get.”
On Feb. 4, Villarreal scored 23 points as the Pirates downed visiting McLane, 62-45. Todd added 15 points while Heinrichs scored 10 points. Reed- ley lost 75-35 at league co-leader Hoover High on Feb. 10, and closed the regular season out Feb. 12 at home against Sunnyside High on Senior Night.

Reedley High senior Gabriel Badilla gained a quick upper hand on McLane High’s Brandon Mendoza on his way to winning his 160 pound finals match in just 32 sec- onds.
meanwhile, made quick work of their opponents. Anderson needed just more than a minute to finish off Sunnyside’s Ger Vang while Badilla put McLane’s Brandon Mendoza on his back in just 32 seconds.
Reedley had two other finalists in senior Efrain Ortiz (138) and junior Max Saucedo (195); both going 1-1 and losing in the finals to their opponents. Seniors Roger Panabang and Quince Quintana placed third at 145 and
170 pounds, respectively, with Panabang collecting two pins.
For the girls, Villa won her weight class by twice defeating Fresno High’s Maya Blackman. Barrera, meanwhile, bounced back from a first round fall to pull out a decision and then pin McLane’s Angela Escoto in the third period for her title.
Reedley’s other cham- pions all came by forfeit: Alexis Tristan (111), Ro- cio Andrade (116), Kilie
Giglio (121), Aliciia Garza (143), Vanessa Mora (170) and Estefani Gonzalez (235).
Reedley’s boys will compete at the Division 4 championship tourna- ment at Golden West High in Visalia on Satur- day, Feb. 15. That same day, the Pirate girls will participate in the section- al tournament at Mission Oak High School in Tu- lare. Matches start at 10 a.m.
playoffs on the horizon, Dillon may soon move up the ranks in scoring. Just ahead of Dillon is Sanger’s Tom Bruner (‘86-’88) with 1,114 points, Cameron Stanley (’16- ’19) with 1,179 points and Patrick Pinkard (’09-’11) with 1,280 points. Sanger’s all-time leading scorer is Jarred Contente (’00-’02), who ac-
cumulated 1,629 career points.
Seeding for Division 3 play- offs will be released this weekend and Sanger will be hoping for a spot near the top. As of Feb. 11, maxpreps.com had the Apaches ranked No. 3 in its Central Section division.
Playoffs are scheduled to begin on Feb. 18 and will last until the end of the month.
