“The team is young but working hard,” said Kiehn. “They’ve made big strides.” One returner from last year’s Valley championship team is Ulises Ramirez, left, who was the team’s No. 3 player last year.

Mireya Hernandez, second from left, crosses the finish line in the women’s 100 meters race at last Wednesday’s St. Patrick’s Day Classic. The Dinuba High senior took second in the event.
That group was made up of mostly seniors and coach Fadra Kiehn admits this year is a rebuilding year.

seconds faster than second place teammate Nathaniel Medina.
In addition to his performance on the track, Martinez also helped his team on the field, winning the long jump event with a distance of 20’6.5”.
“Daniel has really improved a lot this year,” said Lichtenwaldt. “His effort is really going to push the rest of the team as well.”
Dinuba’s long distance runners also continue to make strides for the team. In the 800 meters race the Emperor runners swept the field by finishing in the top five positions. Junior Danny Araujo took first place with a time of 2:03.42. Just behind him were teammates Leo Jimenez, finishing in second place with a time of 2:05.83, and Jaime Cueva, who finished in third with a time of 2:06.81.
Dinuba’s Diego Estrada and Oscar Perez finished in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Cueva and Perez also excelled in the 1600 meter race, with Cueva finishing in first place with a time of 4:46.11 and Perez finishing in second place with a time of 4:48.62.
Also helping to carry the team
with their strength in the shot put and discus events are Dinuba seniors Alex Sandoval and Adam Aguilar. Sandoval, who is the defending league champion in the shot put event, dominated the field in the event at last week’s event. He threw for 47’5” to take first place. Dinuba’s AJ Rodriguez finished in second place with a throw of 38’9.5.
Aguilar also dominated the field in the discus event. His throw of 119’5” was 14 feet farther than second place Cruz Nieves of Chowchilla. Orosi’s Chris Lumsden finished in third place with at throw of 103’6”.
As for the track and field Lady Emperors, senior Mireya Hernandez, who despite standing only 4’10”, finished in the top three in both the 100-meter and 200-meter races. Hernandez was just edged out by Fresno’s Anissa Brown in the 100-meter race. Her second place time of 14.09 seconds was just over two-tenths of a second slower than Brown.
In the 200-meter race Hernandez finished in third place with a time of 30.11 seconds.
Also returning for the Lady Emperors track and field team is
sophomore Yazmine Villarreal- Harris, who is the defending league and Valley champion in the girl’s shot put event. At last week’s event, Villarrea-Harris showed why she is the defending champion by taking first place with a throw of 35’. Teammate Felicia Vela came in second place with a throw of 27’11”.
Villarreal-Harris also took first place in the discus event, throwing for 105’5”. Vela again finished behind her with a throw of 87’6”.
After winning the St. Patrick’s Day Classic, the Dinuba track and field team traveled to Coalinga on Friday for the George Olsen Invitational. Unlike last Wednesday’s meet, which had a field of five schools, Friday’s meet featured a far more competitive field of 15 schools.
The Dinuba boys’ team won Friday’s meet as well, beating second place Hanford West 131 to 116.5. It was the Emperor’s fourth straight meet victory.
Dinuba’s next event will be this Saturday when they travel to Dublin for the Dublin Distance Fiesta. They then start league on Wednesday with a meet in Exeter.
In preparing the team for what may lay ahead, and after seeing a different pace in their semifinals game against St. Gabriel Mission, Vega plans to get her team into tournaments next year that feature faster paced teams from Southern California. “I want to get them prepared for the next level,” said Vega. “And to do that we need to give them more exposure to teams like that (St. Gabriel).”
Perhaps the cherry on top for the Lady Cardinals, aside
from all the other historical achievements they accomplished this year, is being the last team to play in the current Orosi High School stadium.
The district was hoping to begin construction on the new high school stadium at the beginning of this month. However, the project was delayed to allow the Lady Cardinals to host last Tuesday’s State playoff game against Azusa.
Their victory over the Aztecs will go down in history as Orosi
High School’s highest level win in the old stadium.
Among all the historical achievements the Lady Cardinals achieved this year is being the only Orosi High team to go undefeated in the regular season, winning back-to-back league titles, winning the Division V Valley Championship, being the only Orosi High team to host a State playoff game, being the only Orosi High team to win a State playoff game and scoring the most goals by a program (127).
Back in the
swing of things
Last year the Dinuba High School boy’s tennis team made school history by becoming the first to win a Valley championship.
