Visalia for coach Joseph D’Agostino this fall.
Marcus Washington of Central scored the only touchdown of the game for county. Imanol Arredondo of Caruthers was named most valuable player.
Sanger’s contribution to the county team also included linebacker Robert Lopez and quarterback Blake Wolf. Wolf, like Romias, garnered significant playing time and routinely found his receivers.
“It was a great ending for my senior year going out with a win,” Wolf said. “Maybe my last football game.”
Wolf said he got to meet new people and forge new friendships in the brief amount of time the all-star team had to practice. He said his defense played as a unit almost from the first time they encountered each other. “Impressive to watch,” he said.
“I went out there and had fun. I didn’t’ over think it. Especially for only having a week of the playbook.”
The county side was coached by Stephen Hurt of Kerman, the city side by Atnaf Harris of Edison.
Hurt gathered his players around him after
the game. “That was playoff fashion,” he said. “That’s the way it should be. Hell of a job.”
Shane Sherman, a county representative who stalked the sideline encouraging players throughout the game, said the county team really started to look good their final three practices. “They really melded,” he said. “They really came together.”
Giving a little more dimension to the story was assistant coach Manuel Rodrigues for the county side.“Notrealfastorbig,” he said. “But very tough. I’d say stout.”
One of the more effective defensive weapons was Mitch Maggini, the lone representative on the county team from the unincorporated town of Riverdale, which is south on Highway 41 before Lemoore. “We shut them down,” he said. “That’s all I’ve got to say.”
As for his teammates, he did add, “Really good group. Great players, great attitude.”
And Romias added, “We got a lot of heart. I got heart.” The field began to clear after that. People started to head home.

Jonathon Romias takes on perhaps the biggest guy on the field during this play. The county defenders played a big part in the win June 15 at Lamonica Stadium in Clovis. Above left, Apache Robert Lopez also played for county.

Damien Duarte, indicating something on the field, is among a strong group of returning varsity players this season.

was Pena’s son, John, who said, “We have the high ceiling. Nowhere but up for sure.”
Running backs coach Abel Gallardo said he’s been to what seemed like a thousand similar tournaments over the years. He said the tournament “teaches you to be aggressive, teaches you to get the ball. It teaches you the little things, the intangibles that carry over.” And at that point a play is made by his Apaches
and he yelled, “Let’s get a score!”
Collazo then rocketed the football to Samuel Tyler, who snags the ball for a big gain against the Bearcats.
Between matches Tyler spoke a little about the upcoming season. He said he and his teammates are working hard to encourage each other to perform at their best. “We’re trying to get better,” he said. But developing that requires a lot of confidence in each other, and Tyler mentioned they’ve done a good job so far at bonding and getting to know each other.
“We have a very strong bond in this team,” he said.
“Like brothers.”
The tournament that day
involved the teams getting seeded about lunch time and then bracketed playoff- style to determine which one would emerge with bragging rights.
Sanger showed some flash early but lacked a little sophistication in defense in the second game. Damien Duarte, coming into his senior year, played like he’ll be one to watch come the fading days of summer, tagging one after another receiver out.
“You’ve got to want it more than the other player,” Tyler said.
Alex Saefong, another
senior next year, caught a couple passes during early competition. He was fast and looked serious. Off the field, he indicated more work needs to be done before the regular season begins Aug. 17 against Reedley.
“We still need work,” he said. And the team needs to sort out its leadership, he added. “Some guys need to step up.”
