The Dinuba Sentinel News Pastor's Corner
Do not judge, lest we be judged
Thursday, October 4, 2018 | A3
If you’ve been watching the evening news at all in the last few weeks, you’ve seen plenty of political
battling over President Trump’s latest Supreme Court nominee. (Having said that, I realize that I may have just lost you in terms of sticking with this article, cause you’ve already seen too much of all this! So, just one plea to please hang in there and see what one pastor’s perspective might be.) The arguments basically come down to a “she said—he said” type thing. You can almost guess one’s political party by how they react to the Judge Kavanaugh nomination: if you’re a Democrat,
you side with the woman; if you’re a Republican, you favor Judge K.
I read a brief comment on the situation last week, in which the author said
that for the sake of the country Judge Kavanaugh should step aside. He went on to say that “such a selfless act might serve as the first stitch in closing our nation’s ever-growing wound.” Sounds heroic, self-sacrificing and just the sort of thing a judge might do to remain “above the fray.” Who knows if by the end of this week the judge might have had enough of it all, (and who can blame him?) or the
FBI might have weighed in and settled it all for us.
But I think that a better, Christian response should be that of Christ who
said that we are not to judge one another (and yes, I know that we are to be discerning), that the same measure we use to judge others will be used on us, that we should try to see things from another’s perspective, and above all to seek first the Kingdom of God. (see Matthew 6 & 7) In other words, that we are to be ones who are above the fray; that we are to think differently, to get our perspective from the Kingdom of God, rather than the mindset of our culture. That isn’t easy, especially
if we watch much TV since it is pervaded with the mindset of “me first” and youth is where life and vitality is found, and sex is purely for fun and pleasure wherever and whenever, and you have to fight to have your way.
Jesus’ attitude, however, was humility wins (the “meek inherit the earth”), love conquers all (“my command is that you love one another as I have loved you”, “the greatest of these is love”,etc), and truth
is seeing things as God sees them (“seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.”)

I know of no better way to attain that attitude than to soak yourself in scripture: read it over and
over (especially Jesus’ own words— the ones in red in many Bibles) until it is a part of you. We tend to think that memorization

is only for young children, but I can personally attest to the fact that we all can learn it by reading it over and over until it controls our thinking and behavior.
And, in the meantime with the arguments flying around in the political world: pray for our leaders, pray for the media, for opinion makers, pray for all
of us to seek first his kingdom and his righteousness. And maybe, just maybe, God will send us revival and we’ll see real peace.
