P. 3
In 1966 botanist Larry Morse was reorganizing the
botanical collections at the museum and rediscovered Van
Cleve’s herbarium. Morse wrote a description of the
herbarium and made a presentation about it to the Ohio
Academy of Science in 1967. He also made list of the
species in the herbarium along with the taxonomy of the
specimens as they were named at that time.
The John W. Van Cleve Herbarium now resides at
Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton. It is slowly
deteriorating but in remarkably good shape for a collection
so old. This booklet is an attempt to preserve a record of
these beautiful specimens, collected by a founder of
Dayton when much of the land was still a wilderness.
