In 1966 botanist Larry Morse was reorganizing the


               botanical collections at the museum and rediscovered Van


               Cleve’s herbarium.  Morse wrote a description of the


               herbarium and made a presentation about it to the Ohio

               Academy of Science in 1967.  He also made list of the


               species in the herbarium along with the taxonomy of the


               specimens as they were named at that time.







               The John W. Van Cleve Herbarium now resides at


               Boonshoft Museum of Discovery in Dayton. It is slowly


               deteriorating but in remarkably good shape for a collection


               so old.  This booklet is an attempt to preserve a record of


               these beautiful specimens, collected by a founder of


               Dayton when much of the land was still a wilderness.
