Loss and gain in Cyprus Military Working Dog Troop
 by Cpl James Hewitt
In July 2022, Cyprus Military Working Dog (MWD) Troop said farewell to Mrs Clare Bland who
was posted back to the UK with her husband and two sons. Clare was our dedicated and hard-working kennel assistant who we all valued greatly. She was immensely helpful in the upkeep of animal welfare within the Troop, not only for our dogs, but also for our residential stray cats Bob & Marley. Still to this day, we thank you Clare.
Shortly after the departure of Clare, we welcomed Mrs Shannon Clarke, our new kennel assistant. Shannon is a military spouse with
a son and daughter based here in Episkopi, she completed her Initial Dog Handler course here in Cyprus, Instructed by me, Cpl Hewitt.
Passing her course with flying colours, Shannon
was an instant hit with all the dogs
and members of the Troop. A character who
brings a sense of joy and humour into each working day, and a
steak bake or two, Shannon
is already a beloved
member of this Cyprus team.
Finally, it is with heavy hearts
that we say goodbye to MWD Sam. Sam passed away peacefully in his handlers’ arms (LCpl Tatters) on the 10th February 2023 after being diagnosed with an untreatable cancer.
Sam was a Vehicle Search dog who had spent all his working career here in Cyprus. He was a very cheeky character who loved to nibble his handler which was comical for everyone to see, luckily Sam didn’t have many teeth.
Leaving us at only 4 years and 11 months old, Sam had a short life, but in his time has left behind some very happy memories for those who have worked with him. Thank you for your service, goodnight, “we will remember you”.
