60 Simply Vegetables
Peter Rogers – Assistant Estate Manager at Burnby Hall
as the metal giraffe family, to be shown off more clearly.
Spring flowers commence with snowdrops of which there are
over 60 varieties present, mainly in the rock garden. Bluebells appear next and are grown in the Stumpery, an area of old tree trunks at the far end of the lake and based on a similar design found at King Charles’ Highgrove House. The Tulip Festival forms the biggest floral event of the year and takes place at the end of April/beginning of May. Areas dedicated to growing native wildflowers have been a recent addition and provide extra colour and feeding opportunities for pollinators.
In the summer, the water lilies typically appear from mid- June until the end of August, each flower lasting only a few days. Summer is also the season to stage a variety of themed visitor events. To reflect the Hall’s visitor profile, the aim is to create a balance between quiet reflective days and more active, dedicated event days featuring live entertainment of interest to both children and adults.
Peter provided us with an interesting overview of what to expect throughout the year and we look forward to visiting the Hall and grounds this coming June.
At the time of writing, we are planning to hold our AGM at the end of January. To encourage more people to attend, we are providing a finger buffet for the first time since Covid began and the second half of the meeting will feature a talk about the adventures of our secretary during her recent working visit to Pakistan.
For those able and willing to participate, the NVS Zoom presentations over the winter period continue to prove informative and popular. The technology may have proved
a challenge and a steep learning curve for some but Zoom meetings increase the opportunities for both our members and, equally importantly, potential NVS members to participate from the comfort of their own homes.
Reports on our Spring events will feature in the next edition of Simply Vegetables but, in the meantime, our programme
of planned events and current news can be seen on our website http://nvseyda.uk and dedicated Facebook page.
Our continued aim is to provide a variety of interesting topics throughout the year that will appeal to our existing members, as well as attract new ones.
